BOARD OF DIRECTORS
MINUTES OF THE JANUARY 21, 2020, REGULAR BOARD MEETING

CALL TO ORDER
Natalie Hagglund called the meeting to order at 5:00 PM in the Administration & Resource Center Boardroom.

ROLL CALL
Board members present: Natalie Hagglund, Ken Christoferson, Miranda Evans, Charlotte Murry, Al Schreiber.
Student Advisors present: Aleena Wiegand and Jacob Platt

RECESS
At 5:02 PM Natalie Hagglund announced the Board would recess to Executive Session for approximately 55 minutes to review the performance of a public employee.

RECONVENE
At 6:00 PM, Natalie Hagglund reconvened the regular meeting.

FLAG SALUTE
Natalie Hagglund led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Ken Christoferson made a motion to approve the Agenda for the January 21, 2020, Regular Board Meeting. Miranda Evans seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Charlotte Murry made a motion to approve the Minutes for the January 7, 2020, Regular Board Meeting. Al Schreiber seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

Al Schreiber made a motion to approve the Minutes for the January 7, 2020, Board Retreat. Miranda Evans seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT
Dr. Jean Shumate introduced the following reports:

DONATIONS
The donations were presented by Student Advisors Jacob Platt and Aleena Wiegand as follows:

The Stanwood-Camano School District received the following donations:

  1. $1,396.64 from Port Susan Middle School PTO to cover transportation costs for the 7th grade field trip to the Museum of Flight on October 17th,
  2. $583.31 from the Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians to cover transportation costs for district 4th and 5th grade students to visit the fish hatchery in December,
  3. $497.63 in school picture rebates from Firefly Images for classroom supplies at Twin City Elementary,
  4. $472.28 from the Museum of Northwest Art (MoNA) to cover substitute and transportation costs for a teacher training and 3rd grade field trip to the museum,
  5. Hand Bells valued at $250.00 were donated anonymously in support of the music program at Twin City Elementary,
  6. $221.70 from Box Tops for Education to Port Susan Middle School and $149.20 to Utsalady Elementary, for educational supplies, and
  7. $120.00 was received from Ruth and Rob Johnson for classroom supplies at Twin City Elementary.

January is School Board Appreciation Month and Dr. Shumate and staff honored Board Members for their service with cards, posters and treats.

RECESS
At 6:40 PM, Natalie Hagglund recessed the regular meeting for approximately ten minutes so the Board could greet award winners and provide an opportunity for guests to leave following recognitions.

At 6:48 PM, Natalie Hagglund reconvened the regular meeting.

FINANCIAL REPORT
Steve Lidgard, Executive Director of Business Services, presented the December Financial Report. The Executive Summary was reviewed as well as ending fund balances for the General Fund and Debt Service Fund.

STUDENT ADVISORS' REPORT
Jacob Platt reported Lincoln Hill High School (LHHS) held a pancake breakfast on January 9; the Winter Social was January 17 and well-attended by both Stanwood High and LHHS students; Finals Week is January 27 through 31; the last day of the semester is January 31 due to snow days; and, Workforce Development will not be admitting any new students for second semester due to Boeing layoffs and other contractors affected.

Aleena Wiegand reported that Kristen Ronning placed first; Twyla Zoloth, second, in the December 13 Stanwood High School Poetry Out Loud competition and Kristen Ronning will compete in the upcoming regional competition; the Winter Holiday Choir Concert was December 19 and one of the highlights was Hannah Donahue's solo; and, the Winter Wishes assembly on December 20 was a big success and everyone loved the teachers' Twelve Days of Christmas dance. Upcoming events include a Math Night on January 22 for all kids needing help with homework and preparing for tests and finals; January 22 is Jazz Night; the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) exam results will be ready in the library on January 24; College in the High School Night is January 27 for parents and students to learn about Advanced Placement (AP) and college classes; and, first semester ends January 31.

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS
Al Schreiber thanked everyone for the work they do to support the Board.

Miranda Evans expressed appreciation for the cards, posters, and treats and the time everyone took to make them.

Ken Christoferson extended a sincere thank you for the time and effort put into the board appreciation items presented. Mr. Christoferson shared he really enjoys celebrating students, staff, and volunteers, adding it was a great meeting and there is much to look forward to. He thanked all involved for a safe week last week and for the decisions that were made.

Natalie Hagglund welcomed student advisors back to an evening meeting and urged them to meet new board members Charlotte Murry and Miranda Evans after the meeting. Ms. Hagglund shared board members are the largest body of elected officials in the state, covering 294 school districts, advocating at many levels on behalf of students and community, and thanked everyone for their expressions of appreciation for the work schools board members do.

Jean Shumate thanked the board and student advisors for their service. Dr. Shumate thanked Lisa Orton and the transportation staff for doing an amazing job last week and commented she was happy everyone stayed safe.
