BOARD OF DIRECTORS
MINUTES OF THE NOVEMBER 21, 2017, REGULAR BOARD MEETING 
 
CALL TO ORDER
Julie Dean, Board President, called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM in the Administration & Resource Center Boardroom.

ROLL CALL
Board members in attendance were: Natalie Hagglund, Ken Christoferson, Al Schreiber, and Julie Dean. Roger Myers arrived at 7:15 PM. Student Advisors, Ashley Peterson and Omar Figueroa, were absent.

FLAG SALUTE
Ken Christoferson and Julie Dean led the Pledge of Allegiance.
 
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Al Schreiber made a motion to approve the Agenda for the November 21, 2017, Regular Board Meeting. Natalie Hagglund seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.
 
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Ken Christoferson made a motion to approve the Minutes of the November 7, 2017, Regular Board Meeting. Al Schreiber seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved.  Natalie Hagglund abstained from the vote.

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS
There were no comments.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
Dr. Jean Shumate introduced the following reports:

DONATIONS
Natalie Hagglund presented the donations, as follows: Port Susan Middle School PTO donated $681.88 to Port Susan Middle School band program to support the purchase of a student size Eastman Tuba.

UNITED WAY GRANT, STANWOOD-CAMANO AREA FOUNDATION
Lloy Schaaf, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, explained that the Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation received a United Way Grant, $630,000 for the next three (3) years, to support families in poverty. Dr. Schaaf introduced Bev Pronishan, Executive Director of the Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation, who led 16 community partners in a collective initiative, Making Life Work, for the purpose of overcoming barriers and providing opportunities for families to become stable, self-sufficient, and to ensure their children attain early educational opportunities.

EMPLOYEE AWARDS
• Classified Employee of the Month for October - Arleen Voigt, ASSIST Paraeducator at Port Susan Middle School
• Teacher of the Month for October - George Ziegen, Counselor at Stanwood Middle School

VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARDS
• Luckey Elkins, Twin City Elementary
• Erin Hall, Stanwood Elementary

Principals Barbara Marsh, Stanwood Elementary, and Jennifer Allen, Twin City Elementary, recognized the shining stars and volunteers from their schools. The awards are sponsored by Umpqua Bank in partnership with Klesick Farms, Stanwood Cinemas, Dos Reales, and Twin City Lanes. Sara Gosnold, Umpqua Bank, presented gifts and certificates to the award recipients. Board Members and Superintendent Jean Shumate recognized the award recipients with certificates of appreciation.

RECESS
Julie Dean, Board President, recessed the meeting to allow guests to leave at 7:57 PM. The meeting reconvened at 8:01 PM.

SEPTEMBER FINANCIAL 
Steve Lidgard, Executive Director of Business Services, reported on the financial reports for the month of September 2017. He reviewed the Executive Summary and stated that contractual adjustments would be completed by December.

CONSENT AGENDA
Natalie Hagglund made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items, 1-5, listed below. Roger Myers seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.
1. Donations. 
2. First Reading of New Student Policy 3144, Release of Information Concerning Student Sexual and Kidnapping Offenders. 
3. 2017-18 Amendment to the Contract with Children’s Services at Sherwood Community Services.
4. Personnel Consent Agenda.
5. Bills and Payroll.

STUDENT ADVISOR REPORTS
There were no reports.

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS 
Roger Myers apologized for being late to the meeting.

Ken Christoferson said that the annual conference for directors was one of the best that he had attended.

Natalie Hagglund attended a workshop at the directors’ conference regarding board relationships and was thankful for being a part of the Stanwood-Camano school board where the focus was on student achievement, respectful communication with each other, with staff, and the community.

Al Schreiber also appreciated the annual conference and he enjoyed the staff, student and volunteer awards that were presented at the board meeting.

Julie Dean stated that prayers were being said for the families of two former high school students that were missing on Mount Baker. She wished everyone to have a Happy Thanksgiving.

ADJOURNMENT
Julie Dean adjourned the regular meeting at 8:08 PM.
