MINUTES OF THE NOVEMBER 18, 2014 REGULAR BOARD MEETING

CALL TO ORDER

President Ken Christoferson called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM in the Administration & Resource Center boardroom.

ROLL CALL

Board members in attendance were: Julie Dean, Al Schreiber, Roger Myers, and Ken Christoferson. Mindy Atwell and Ingrid Pelletier, Student Advisors, were also present. Darlene Hartley was absent and excused.

FLAG SALUTE
Victor Hanzeli, Elger Bay Elementary Principal, led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

Roger Myers made a motion to approve the Agenda for the November 18, 2014, Regular Board Meeting. Al Schreiber seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Julie Dean made a motion to approve the Minutes of the November 4, 2014, Regular Board Meeting. Al Schreiber seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved.

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS

There were no comments.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Dr. Jean Shumate introduced the following reports:

DONATIONS

Ingrid Pelletier and Mindy Atwell presented the donations, as follows: (1) Ohiopyle Prints, Inc., $101.91, to Stanwood High School’s Graduation/Celebration of Excellence programs, (2) Eric and Holly Thompson, $300.00, in kindness, to the Stanwood High School FFA Chapter, and (3) Windermere Foundation, $500.00, to Utsalady Elementary for student needs.

AWARDS
Joy Rusko, Secretary to the Superintendent, introduced the following awards:

SHINING STARS
· Jeff Lofgren, Cedarhome Elementary Principal, recognized Jett Brager with the Shining Star Award. Teachers Ashley Bailey, Louise Rawls, and Lori Hayton also shared how Jett was an inspiration for all.

  • Victor Hanzeli, Elger Bay Elementary, recognized Kendra Johnson with the Shining Star Award. Mr. Lee Szymborski told how Kendra perseveres, works hard and is self-confident. 

EMPLOYEE AWARDS
Classified Employee of the Month for October: Rona Olson, Secretary for Port Susan Middle School, was recognized by Principal Dan Johnston. Rona was nominated by many of the school’s staff and Cindy Taggert-Deffinbaugh, on behalf of the staff, recognized her contributions.

Teacher of the Month for October: Judy Birk, Librarian for Twin City Elementary was recognized by Principal Jennifer Allen. Principal Allen also read Judy’s nomination written by Katie Pickrell, who was unable to attend.

RECESS
Director Christoferson recessed the meeting at 7:31 PM for approximately 5 minutes to allow guests to leave. He resumed the meeting at 7:36 PM.

FINANCIAL REPORTS
Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, reported on the Monthly Financial Report for October 2014. He reviewed the Executive Summary, Monthly Fund Balance for the General Fund, and Food Service Report. He noted an error on the report. He said the total Full Time Equivalent enrollment of 4,206 was incorrect. The correct FTE should be 4,058. A revised Food Service Report would be available November 19th.

CONSENT AGENDA
Roger Myers made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items 1-5, listed below. Al Schreiber seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously. 

  1. Donations.
  2. Professional Service Contract with Integrated Rehabilitation Group for Stanwood High School’s Winter Athletics Programs.
  3. Purchase of Two Special Needs School Buses.
  4. Personnel Consent Agenda.
  5. Bills and Payroll

STUDENT ADVISOR REPORTS

Ingrid Pelletier announced some of Stanwood High School’s events: The fall drama production of “May the Farce Be With You” directed by Carrie James was very successful; winter sports are starting; a blood drive was held November 18th; Areana Conferences were held; and Thanksgiving Break begins November 26.

Mindy Atwell reported on Lincoln Hill High School events: A Veterans Day assembly was held and American Legion Veterans presented the colors. She was proud to announce that her Grandpa was a guest speaker.

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS

Roger Myers congratulated Ingrid Pelletier for being recognized by The Herald as a Super Kid. He also said that he enjoyed attending the Veteran Day programs.

Al Schreiber appreciated the teachers, staff and students and the Stanwood/Camano News reporting. He announced that he would be going to the Washington State School Directors Association annual conference in Spokane with fellow board members November 19-22.

Julie Dean said she was sorry that she was unable to attend the fall drama production. Julie also looked forward to going to the annual conference and wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.

Ken Christoferson was happy that Spokane did not have any snow, as he was driving to the conference in Spokane.

ADJOURNMENT

Director Christoferson adjourned the regular meeting at 7:45 PM.
