MINUTES OF THE NOVEMBER 19, 2013 REGULAR BOARD MEETING

CALL TO ORDER

President Ken Christoferson called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM in the Administration & Resource Center boardroom.

ROLL CALL

Board members in attendance were Roger Myers, Pat Patterson, Darlene Hartley, and Ken Christoferson. Ingrid Pelletier and Seth Brisendine, Student Advisors, were also in attendance. Julie Dean was absent and excused.

FLAG SALUTE
Joan Andrews, Twin City Elementary Office Manager, led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

Roger Myers made a motion to approve the Agenda for the November 19, 2013, Regular Board Meeting. Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Darlene Hartley made a motion to approve the Minutes of the November 5, 2013, Special Board Retreat Meeting. Roger Myers seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously. Pat Patterson was absent from the meeting and recused himself.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Dr. Jean Shumate introduced the following reports:

DONATIONS

The donations were read by Ingrid Pelletier and Seth Brisendine as follows: Twin City Elementary PTA ($417.48) to Twin City Elementary, Robert Stanton, REMax Realty ($100.00) to Lincoln Hill High School, Sweet Bliss Frozen Yogurt ($150.00) to Port Susan Middle School, Phiopyle Prints ($201.42) to Stanwood High School, and Conoco Phillips Company ($500.00) to Cedarhome Elementary.

RECOGNITIONS

Joy Rusko, Secretary to the Superintendent, introduced the following awards:

Shining Star Award:

  • Cedarhome Elementary – Principal Jeff Lofgren and teachers Kristen Pappas and Cory Crandall recognized Alexis Mason, 4th grade student, for her strong desire to learn.
  • Elger Bay Elementary – Principal Victor Hanzeli and teachers Ken Szymborski and Jennifer Booth recognizeg 5th grade student Daniel Thompson for being prepared for class and working hard.
  • Utsalady Elementary – Principal Colleen Keller and teachers Sarah Oldow and Darlene Hofbauer recognized Linh Ngo, 5th grade student, for being kind and preserving to reach her goals.
  • Classified Employee of the Month for October: Janine Mai, Twin City Elementary Paraeducator. Principal Dan Johnston recognized Janine and Joan Andrews read her nomination.
  • Teacher of the Month for October: Tracy Langdalen, Twin City Elementary Resource Room. Principal Dan Johnston recognized Tracy and read the nomination from Katie Pickrell (Katie was unable to attend).

Board members presented certificates of achievement, Dr. Shumate presented the pictures for their schools, and sponsor, Tony Warner, Sterling Bank Manager, presented gift certificates from the award sponsors, Sterling Bank, Dos Reales, and Stanwood Cinemas.

  • Ken Christoferson presented a plaque to Director Pat Patterson in recognition of his distinguished service to the children and youth of the Stanwood-Camano School District and in honor of his dedication and leadership on behalf of the citizens of the Stanwood and Camano Island communities. Pat completed his 8th year of his second term as a member on the Board.

RECESS

Director Christoferson recessed the meeting at 7:43 p.m. to enjoy refreshments and allow guests to leave. He resumed the meeting at 7:53 p.m.

FINANCIAL REPORT

Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, reported on the financial reports for the month of October 2013. He discussed the executive summary: General Fund Balance was $4,842,731, Revenues $4,478,780, and Expenditures $7,392,144.

CONSENT AGENDA

Pat Patterson made a motion to approve consent agenda items 1-12, listed below. Roger Myers seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously. 

  1. Donations.
  2. Stanwood High School Field Trips for Swim Team to State Competition, November 14-16, 2013, Federal Way, Washington.
  3. First Reading of Revised Community Relations Policy 4210, Regulation of Dangerous Weapons on School Premises.
  4. Memorandum of Understanding with the Snohomish Health District.
  5. Second Reading/Adoption of Revised Personnel Policy 5240, Evaluation of Staff.
  6. Rate of Pay for Piano Accompanist.
  7. Revised Management Support Policy and Procedure 6220, Bid Requirement.

STUDENT ADVISORS’ REPORT

Ingrid Pelletier reported on Stanwood High School’s athletic teams’ status and said the try-outs for the winter sports season has begun. Ingrid said that the Veterans’ Day assembly went well and the drama department presented a comedy called Leaving Iowa.

Seth Brisendine reported on Lincoln Hill High School’s Veterans’ Day assembly and said the Stanwood American Legion attended. He also announced that conferences were scheduled for November 21 and 22.

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS

Board members thanked and praised Pat for his service on the Board.

Pat Patterson thanked the community for supporting the levy and complimented the student advisors on their reports. He said it was an honor to serve on the board.

ADJOURNMENT

Ken Christoferson adjourned the Regular Meeting at 8:02 PM.
