BOARD OF DIRECTORS 
MINUTES OF THE MAY 19, 2009, REGULAR BOARD MEETING
 
CALL TO ORDER
Roger Myers called the meeting to order at 5:30 PM.  Board members in attendance were:  Darlene Hartley, Ken Christoferson, Roger Myers, Julie Dean and Pat Patterson.  

EXECUTIVE SESSION
Mr. Myers excused the Board to executive session at 5:30 PM to consider the selection of a site or the acquisition of real estate and to evaluate the performance of an employee for approximately 45 minutes.  No action was taken.

RECONVENE FOR RECESS
Mr. Myers reconvened the regular meeting at 6:15 PM and adjourned immediately for a 45-minute recess.

RECONVENE REGULAR MEETING
Anne Marie Olson, student advisor, reconvened the regular meeting at 7:00 PM.  All Board Members and student advisors, Alex Keller and Anne Marie Olson, were present.  Dr. Linda Littlefield, Executive Director of Human Resources, led the Pledge of Allegiance.
 
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Julie Dean made a motion to approve the Agenda.  Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Roger Myers made a motion to approve the Minutes of the May 5, 2009, Regular Board Meeting.  Pat Patterson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS
There were no comments by audience members.

SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT
Dr. Jean Shumate announced the following reports:
 
DONATIONS and RECOGNITIONS
Pat Patterson read the donations from General Mills, Dell Fox Custom Meats, Warm Beach Free Methodist Church, Rain Shadow Properties and Investments LLC, Utsalady Boosters Club, John and Jenna Delzell, and Pacific Grinding Wheel.  

Darin Reid, Deputy Fire Chief Stanwood Camano Fire Department, gave special recognition to Matt Brennan, sports trainer and teacher at Stanwood High School, and Dr. Lassinger, physician, for their quick actions and assistance in the immediate treatment of an injured football player.  Mr. Reid said their response was “life-saving.”

Dr. Linda Littlefield recognized the retirement of Steve Bretland for his service as custodian at Stanwood High School.  Mr. Bretland was unable to attend.

Anne Marie Olson and Alex Keller were recognized for serving two years as Student Advisors to the Board of Directors.  Directors Hartley and Christoferson presented them with certificates and words of appreciation.

Ray Mather, high school woodshop teacher, described the student-made items on display in the board room that were created in his class.  He said the students were proud and excited to share their work.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Board President, Roger Myers, recognized Julie Knight, Utsalady Elementary reading specialist, for being named Teacher of the Year.  Mrs. Knight was recognized for her knowledge, love of education, and the fun and love of learning she brings to students.  Sponsoring the recognition program, Mike Gibson, Sterling Savings Bank, presented her with gifts or certificates from Christine’s Restaurant, Stanwood Cinemas, Portrait by Indy, Character Traits handbag, Skin Care Lounge facial and tea set, and Island Massage.  The audience celebrated with Mrs. Knight by participating in her famous Sock Dance. 

A reception followed for approximately ten minutes.  The meeting reconvened at 7:52 PM.

FINANCIAL REPORT 
Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business and Operations, gave the financial report for the month of April.  He clarified that the March’s general fund balance was omitted from the report and the stated $5,699,544.98 was the April’s balance.

CONSENT AGENDA
Alex Keller, student advisor, asked for a motion to approve the consent agenda.  Ken Christoferson made a motion to approve the Consent Agenda, listed below.   Julie Dean seconded the motion; it passed unanimously

STUDENT ADVISORS REPORT
Anne Marie Olson listed the activities that would be available to attend at the high school.  She said that she is currently attending Bellingham Technical College taking prerequisite courses to become a dental hygienist.  

Alex Keller reported on the remaining athletic events and said that he has been accepted at the University of Washington and Western Washington University.  He plans to take general studies courses.

Alex and Anne Marie, thanked the Board for the opportunity to be Student Advisors.

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS
Board members thanked the student advisors for being a part of the team. 

Darlene Hartley also thanked Sandy Kintner, Personnel Technician, for providing refreshments for the reception.

ADJOURNMENT
Alex Keller adjourned the Regular Meeting at 8:03 PM.

STUDY SESSION
A study session to discuss the FY 2009-10 Budget preceded the meeting at 6:15 PM.  Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business and Operations, reviewed the budget planning timeline, updates on funding, and a description of the process needed to complete the budget.
