Procedure for 3242 Student Cell Phones and Personal Electronic Devices

At the beginning of each school year, students and parents/guardians will be advised about the school district's policy regarding cell phones and other students' electronic devices. Staff will expect student cell phones and other personal electronic devices to be put away during class time and/or the school day, depending on the student's grade level (see below). Office phones are available for student use in cases of emergency.

Elementary School Students
Elementary school students who choose to bring cell phones and other electronic devices to school may only use them before or after the school day. During the school day and while on school district transportation, all cell phones and other devices must be powered off and stored (e.g., in the student’s backpack, locker, or other district-provided storage).

Middle School Students
Middle school students who bring cell phones and other devices to school may only use them and other personal devices before and after the school day. Students must silence their cell phones and other devices and place them out of sight at all other times.

High School Students
High school students who bring cell phones and other devices to school may only use them and other personal devices during transition periods, at lunch, and before/after the school day. Students must silence their cell phones and other devices and place them out of sight upon entering the classroom.

Exceptions
Students having an IEP or 504 Plan that includes specific accommodations for assistive technology may use a cell phone and/or other devices during the school day following the process outlined in the student’s IEP or 504 Plan.

Disciplinary Actions
Students whose behavior violates district policy will be subject to disciplinary actions and may lose the privilege of bringing a device onto district property. Law enforcement will be notified when student conduct using a personal device may violate applicable laws.
