McKinney-Vento Act

Families and students deserve stability, support, and access to school — no matter their housing situation. The Stanwood-Camano School District is here to help students experiencing housing instability stay connected to school and receive the support they need.

If you or someone you know may be living in a temporary or unstable situation, we encourage you to reach out via the Referral Form button below. Our McKinney-Vento team can help remove barriers to school attendance, connect families with resources, and provide support along the way.

To get started, contact your school’s point of contact or the district McKinney-Vento liaison. You can also complete the online housing Questionnaire or complete the printable form via the button below and return it to Michele Kunzman (mkunzman@stanwood.wednet.edu), McKinney-Vento Liaison for the Stanwood-Camano School District.

The Stanwood-Camano School District Implements the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act of 1987 provides support for homeless children and youth to continue their education without interruption or barriers. The definition for McKinney-Vento identification is far more inclusive than what most people think when they think of “homeless.” Please review this information to understand more.

If your family is living in a temporary living situation due to economic circumstances, your preschool-aged and school-aged children may be eligible for some additional school support under federal law.

We work to help eliminate barriers to students’ academic success and extracurricular participation by immediately enrolling students who qualify and providing them with needed supplies and fee waivers. Transportation for eligible students is also provided as long as the commute is in the students’ best interest.

The McKinney-Vento Act defines homeless children as "individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence."

This may include the following:

  • Children and youth sharing housing due to loss of housing, economic hardship or a similar reason

  • Children and youth living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camp grounds due to lack of alternative accommodations

  • Children and youth living in emergency or transitional shelters

  • Children and youth abandoned in hospitals

  • Children and youth whose primary nighttime residence is not ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation (e.g. park benches, etc.)

  • Children and youth living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations

  • Migratory children and youth living in any of the above situations
