Understanding Our Walking Maps

These walking maps are designed to help parents and students navigate routes safely and efficiently.

Under our School Board Policy 6600, students may be required to walk up to 1 mile from their home to a bus stop, provided the route is safe. In areas where certain roads are deemed unsafe, additional stops are established so that no student has to walk more than 1 mile to or from their bus.

These maps are updated regularly as safe sidewalk options are built. These updates are thoroughly analyzed by our community Capital Projects Committee to ensure that every route reflects improvements in pedestrian safety. All of these measures are implemented in accordance with Policy 6600, ensuring that we consistently prioritize the well-being of our students.

Cedarhome Elementary School

The following items were found to be present when analyzing roads within 1 mile of the school:

The residential areas within the 1 mile walk to the school have sidewalks/paths, crosswalks and roads designated at 20 mph and 25 mph.

Conclusion:

The condition in the residential area around the school is acceptable for students walking.

For your reference, below is a map of roads — highlighted in green — that are within 1 mile of the school. However, in order to be considered a safe walking route, the road must comply with the conditions listed above and in School Board Policy 6600.

Elger Bay Elementary School

The following items were found to be present when analyzing roads within 1 mile of the school:

Walking paths available to reach the school speed limit zone do not meet District Criteria #1, as the speed limit exceeds 25 mph
- Elger Bay Road - 50 mph
- Dry Lake Road - 40 mph
- Mountain View Road - 50 mph
A path connecting Dry Lake Road to the Elger Bay Elementary School does not meet District Criteria # 3 as it passes through a wooded area.
Crosswalks are not present within the 1 mile walk out, which does not meet District Criteria # 4.

Conclusion:

Walking routes do not meet District Criteria. All students within the one mile walk out boundary area qualify for transportation.

Stanwood Elementary School

The following items were found to be present when analyzing roads within 1 mile of the school:

The residential areas close to the school have walkways, crosswalks and roads designated at 20 mph and 25 mph with the exception of Old Pacific Highway and 98th Ave south of SR 532
The Old Pacific Highway just north of Lovers Road is designated 50 mph and does not have any walking paths. There is a railroad crossing at the Lovers Road and Old Pacific Intersection.
The 98th Ave south of SR 532 does not have any paths to get to the sidewalk on SR 532. This road is posted for 25 mph.
There is a crosswalk with a crossing guard and flashing lights at the intersection of 273rd PL NW and 102nd Ave NW with a speed limit of 20 mph during school hours.

Conclusion:

The condition in the residential area around the school is acceptable for student walking with two exceptions. Walking routes do not meet the district criteria on Old Pacific Highway and 98th Ave NW south of SR 532 to allow students to get to Stanwood Elementary safely. These two areas qualify for transportation.

For your reference, below is a map of roads — highlighted in green — that are within 1 mile of the school. However, in order to be considered a safe walking route, the road must comply with the conditions listed above and in School Board Policy 6600.

Twin City Elementary School

The following items were found to be present when analyzing roads within 1 mile of the school:

The residential areas close to the school have sidewalks/paths, crosswalks and roads designated at 20 mph and 25 mph.
The following areas within a mile of the school have hazards as follows:
1. The Pioneer Highway south of 72nd Ave NW is designated 45 mph and walking paths are next to the road separated only by a fog-line.
2. No sidewalks/paths exist on 268th St NW east of 72nd Ave NW
3. No sidewalks/paths exist on 64th Ave NW.

Conclusion:

The condition in the residential area around the school is acceptable for student walking with exceptions. Walking routes do not meet the district criteria on items 1-3 within the one-mile area. These areas qualify for transportation.

For your reference, below is a map of roads — highlighted in green — that are within 1 mile of the school. However, in order to be considered a safe walking route, the road must comply with the conditions listed above and in School Board Policy 6600.

Utsalady Elementary School

The following items were found to be present when analyzing roads within 1 mile of the school:

A 20 mph school zone is available on both approaches to the school entrance road on Arrowhead Road.
An off-road pathway connects Arrowhead Road and Cross Island but is accessed via walking paths on the roads identified in # 4 below.
Crosswalks present at the intersection of Cross Island Road and East Camano Drive but they are accessed via walking paths on the roads identified in # 4 below.
Walking paths available to reach the school speed limit zone and the off-road pathway do not meet the District Criteria # 1 as the speed limits exceed 25 mph.
- Arrowhead Road - 35 mph
- Cross Island Road - 50 mph
- East Camano Drive - 50 mph

Conclusion:

Walking routes do not meet the District Criteria. All students within the 1-mile walk out boundary area qualify for transportation.

Stanwood Middle School

The following items were found to be present when analyzing roads within 1 mile of the school:

The residential areas close to the school have walkways, crosswalks and roads designated at 20 mph and 25 mph with the exception of Old Pacific Highway.
The following areas within the 1 mile walk out boundary have hazards as follows:
1. Old Pacific Highway just north of Lovers Road is designated 50 mph and does not have any walking paths. There is a railroad crossing at the Lovers Road and Old Pacific Intersection.
2. The 98th Ave south of SR 532 does not have any paths to get to the sidewalk on SR 532. This road is posted for 25 mph.
3. There is an active railroad station and tracks paralleling 84th Ave. All students east of 84th Ave would have to cross the tracks or walk on Highway 532 to get to school.
4. Along SR 532 in the one mile walk out boundary area is 35 mph or higher.
5. No sidewalks/paths or crosswalks exist for 267th ST NW, which connects to Marine Drive.

Conclusion:

The condition in the residential area around the school is acceptable for student walking with exceptions. Walking routes do not meet the District Criteria on items 1-4 above that is still within the 1-mile walk out boundary. These areas qualify for transportation.

Port Susan Middle School

The following items were found to be present when analyzing roads within 1 mile of the school:

The residential areas close to the school have sidewalks/paths, crosswalks and roads designated at 20 mph and 25 mph.
The following areas within a mile of the school have hazards as follows:
1. The Pioneer Highway south of 72nd Ave NW is designated 45 mph and walking paths are next to the road separated only by a fog-line.
2. The Pioneer Highway north of SR 532 designated 30 mph, and walking paths are next to the road separated only by a fog-line except between Cedarhome Dr and 276th St NW where there is a sidewalk on the east side of the road. Highway is designated 35 mph north of 276th St NW.
3. There is an active railroad station and tracks paralleling 84th Ave. All students west of 84th Ave would have to cross the tracks or walk on SR 532 to get to school.
4. For the neighborhood north side of Cedarhome Dr NW and east of Pioneer Highway, which include; Park Drive, Henning Drive, 276th Place NW, 82nd Dr NW, 83rd Dr NW, 84th Dr NW, 84th Ave NW, 85th Dr NW, 280th Pl NW, there are no connecting sidewalks/paths at the corner of Cedarhome Rd/276th St NW/80th Ave NW to get to the school.
5. No sidewalks/paths exist on 268th St NW east of 72nd Ave NW.
6. No sidewalks/paths exist on 64th Ave NW.

Conclusion:

The condition in the residential area around the school is acceptable for student walking with exceptions. Walking routes do not meet the District Criteria on items 1-6 within the 1-mile walk out area. These areas qualify for transportation.

Church Creek Campus & Stanwood High School

The following items were found to be present when analyzing roads within 1 mile of the school:

The residential areas within the one mile walk to the school have sidewalks/paths, crosswalks and roads designated at 20 mph and 25 mph.
The following areas within the one mile walk out boundary have hazards as follows:
1. The P ioneer Highway north of SR 532 is designated 30 mph and walking paths are next to the road separated only by a fog-line except between Cedarhome Dr and 276th St NW where there is a sidewalk on the east side of the road. Highway is designated 35 mph north of 276th St NW.
2. No sidewalks/paths exist on 268th St NW east of 72nd Ave
3. For the neighborhoods south of SR 532 that remain inside the one mile walk out boundary would have to cross SR 532 to get to school.

Conclusion:

The condition in the residential area around the school is acceptable for students walking. Walking routes do not meet the District Criteria on items 1-3 that is still within the one mile walk out boundary. These areas qualify for transportation.
