Special Services
Stanwood-Camano School District recognizes that some students require specialized instruction and/or services to achieve success in school. In order to provide appropriate educational opportunities designed to meet each student's unique learning needs, we have a continuum of special program options.
The school district provides services to identify and evaluate potential disabilities in children ages birth to 21 living within the Stanwood-Camano School District boundaries. We offer screening that provide parents with information about their student's academic, vision, hearing, language, cognitive, and motor skill development.
Special Services staff are committed to helping you identify the services your stsudent may need. If you have concerns about your student's development please contact us at 360-629-1236.

Adult Transition Program
The Adult Transition Program offers support to young adults with unique needs as they transition into the workforce. The program provides students with a variety of services, and partners with local businesses to provide on-job training and internship opportunities. This real-world work experience is an essential ingredient for a successful transition to adulthood for our young adults in special education. The willingness of our local business partners helps students learn valuable skills and gain confidence.

Home Hospital Instruction
Home-Hospital Service Procedures
-
Home/Hospital instruction is available to students who are temporarily unable to attend school for an estimated period of four weeks or more due to physical and/or mental disability or illness. The four-week minimum period of absences may occur over a block of time or intermittent. The amount of time the student may be absent from school is determined by a qualified medical practitioner, and must be stated on the form. H/H services are not provided during school vacations and will not exceed 18 weeks.
-
Parent notifies the school nurse or counselor that his/her child will be absent from school for a period of four weeks or more, based on doctor's orders.
-
School contact person provides parent with the Request for Home/Hospital Services form to be completed by a qualified medical practitioner.
-
Parent or doctor must return a completed Request for Home/Hospital Services form to school contact.
-
Send completed Request for Home Hospital Services form to Director of Special Services for review. The Director will notify school contact of the recommendation.
-
If authorized, the school contact notifies the classroom teachers.
Important Notes
Providing H/H services is a limited and temporary intervention designed to help students keep up with critical subject coursework. It is not designed to deliver a full week of instruction at home or in the hospital. Many subjects cannot feasibly be tutored such as vocational classes, electives and performance based classes. Each classroom teacher will decide which assignments/content be completed at home or in the hospital. If you require assistance or have questions, please contact the Special Services Department at 360-629-1236.
McKinney Vento Act
The McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act of 1987 provides support for homeless children and youth to continue their education without interruption or barriers. The definition for McKinney-Vento identification is far more inclusive than what most people think when they think of “homeless.”
Please review our McKinney-Vento webpage for more information, links, and resources.
Section 504
A 504 plan helps a child who meets the criteria for a disability (under the Rehabilitation Act) that interferes with accessing their education.
The 504 plan outlines accommodations and modifications that the student needs to ensure academic success and their ability to access their learning environment.
Generally, a 504 plan is not as involved as an Individualized Education Plan. The main difference between a 504 plan and an IEP is the provision of specially designed instruction; students with a 504 plan learn alongside their peers rather than receiving individualized special education instruction.
