BOARD OF DIRECTORS
MINUTES OF THE NOVEMBER 17, 2015, REGULAR BOARD MEETING

CALL TO ORDER
Ken Christoferson called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM in the Administration & Resource Center Boardroom.

ROLL CALL
Board members in attendance were: Julie Dean, Al Schreiber, Darlene Hartley, Roger Myers, and Ken Christoferson. Silver Merideth, Student Advisor, was in attendance and Riley Cunningham was absent and excused.

FLAG SALUTE
Bill Hartley, Darlene Hartley's husband, led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Darlene Hartley made a motion to approve the Agenda for the November 17, 2015, Regular Board Meeting. Julie Dean seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Al Schreiber made a motion to approve the Minutes of the November 3, 2015, Regular Board Meeting. Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS
There were no comments.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
Dr. Jean Shumate introduced the following reports:

DONATIONS
Silver Merideth presented the following donation: Stanwood Middle School PTO donated nine Hytera UHG Digital portable radios, value $2,500, to Stanwood Middle School. The administration and office staff will use the radios to enhance communication.

AWARDS

  • Joy Rusko, Secretary to the Superintendent, introduced the Shining Star and Employee Awards.
    a. Shining Stars: Hector-Omar Mejia - Elger Bay Elementary, Michael Phillips - Stanwood Elementary, and Alexis Edenso -Twin City Elementary.
  • Maurene Stanton, Executive Director of Human Resources, introduced the Volunteer Awards.
    b. Volunteer Service Award: Lee Lansinger - Elger Bay Elementary, Debbie Carr -; Stanwood Elementary, and Lynn Isaksen -; Twin City Elementary
  • Employee Awards: Lisa Dean, Stanwood High School ASSIST Paraeducator -; Classified Employee of the Month for October and Margaret Olson, Stanwood High School Career and Technical Education -; Teacher of the Month.

Darlene Hartley, on behalf of the Board, presented Certificates of Achievement. Superintendent Shumate presented framed photos for the employees. Tony Warner presented gift certificates to the recipients on behalf of Umpqua Bank (sponsor) in partnership with Stanwood Cinemas, Dos Reales, Snow Goose Bookstore, Klesick Family Farms, and Wayne’s Corner Café.

  • Dr. Shumate announced that Darlene Hartley was going off the Board and it was her last meeting. Mrs. Hartley requested that Dr. Shumate read a statement, on her behalf, to thank our community, staff, Dr. Shumate and Joy Rusko and our administrative leadership and fellow Board members, for the opportunity to serve on the Stanwood-Camano School Board for the last 12 years. Mrs. Hartley's statement read: "I am so grateful and have been blessed immeasurably by the friendships forged carrying out the crucial work of educating our children. Natalie Hagglund is a superb addition to our school board and brings a myriad of talents, skills and abilities to this position. I can't thank her enough for her willingness to serve on behalf of our Community in this way. In closing, a special thank you to Mary, Greg, Mason, and Luke Hoffman and Bill Hartley, my beloved Family, for helping me with these responsibilities and for caring so deeply about public education. Most gratefully, Darlene Hartley"

Ken Christoferson presented Darlene with a plaque in recognition of her service on the Board of Directors. Each board member addressed and shared their appreciation of Darlene.


RECESS

Ken Christoferson recessed the meeting at 8:15 PM for approximately 5 minutes to allow guest to leave. He resumed the meeting at 8:22 PM


FINANCIAL REPORTS

Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, reported on the Monthly Financial Reports for October 2015. He reviewed the Executive Summary and Food Service Report.


CONSENT AGENDA
Darlene Hartley made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items 1-9, listed below. Julie Dean seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

STUDENT ADVISORS REPORT

Silver Merideth shared that the senior class at Lincoln Hill High School met with Principal Ovenell to discuss graduation expectations and information on scholarship and colleges. Graduation is scheduled for June 13 at 6:30 PM.

Board members and Dr. Shumate praised Darlene for her service and many kind words were expressed.
