BOARD OF DIRECTORS
MINUTES OF THE JUNE 21, 2016, REGULAR BOARD MEETING

CALL TO ORDER
Ken Christoferson called the meeting to order at 5:00 PM in the Administration & Resource Center Boardroom.

ROLL CALL
Board members in attendance were: Julie Dean, Natalie Hagglund, Al Schreiber, Roger Myers, and Ken Christoferson.

Ken Christoferson announced that Superintendent Jean Shumate was absent due to surgery on her broken wrist and Lloy Schaaf, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, would present the superintendent's report on her behalf.

FLAG SALUTE
Director Roger Myers led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Julie Dean made a motion to approve the Agenda for the June 21, 2016, Regular Board Meeting. Al Schreiber seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Roger Myers made a motion to approve the Minutes of the June 7, 2016, Regular Board Meeting. Natalie Hagglund seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS
Beka Johnston of Stanwood and parent of a fourth grade student addressed the Board regarding adequate staffing and class size at the elementary level.

SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT
Dr. Lloy Schaaf, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, presented the Superintendent's Report.

DONATIONS
Julie Dean presented the following donations:
1. Stanwood Elementary PTO donated transportation costs, $219.83 and $117.85 to Stanwood Elementary for kindergarten field trip to Everett Children's Museum and to the Conway Farm.
2. Utsalady Booster Club provided transportation costs, $447.48, to Utsalady Elementary for the fifth grade field trip to Pier 66 in Seattle.
3. The Stanwood High School Band Boosters donated the cost of taxes, $223.96, on the audio-visual equipment that was previously purchased for the Stanwood High School band program.
4. Port Susan Middle School PTO provided transportation costs, $210.00 and $1,180.68, to Port Susan Middle School for the seventh grade field trip to visit the Holocaust Museum in Seattle and to go to the Woodland Park Zoo.
5. Friends of Camano Island Parks donated transportation costs, $665.83, to Stanwood Elementary, Elger Bay Elementary, and to Utsalady Elementary for the second grade field trip to Camano Island State Park.
6. Terracycle U.S., LLC. Donated $500 to Utsalady Elementary for recycling Capri juice pouches.
7. Cedarhome Elementary donated the costs of transportation, $705.63 and $3,560.77 to Cedarhome Elementary for the following field trips:
a. Fifth grade class to outdoor education camp
b. Third grade class to a glass blowing studio and to Padilla Bay
c. Choir performances in Stanwood and to Western Washington University
d. Kindergarten class to the Everett Children's Museum
e. First grade class to Woodland Park Zoo
f. Second grade to Seattle Science Center
g. Crossing Guards to Birch Bay
8. Twin City Elementary provided transportation costs, $719.29, to Twin City Elementary for the following field trips: Highly Capable class to Pearson House, first grade class to Woodland Park Zoo and second grade class to the Seattle Science Center.

FINANCIAL REPORTS
Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, reported on the Monthly Financial Reports for May 2016. He reviewed the Executive Summary and noted that class size adjustments were made in September.

CONSENT AGENDA
Al Schreiber made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items 1-11 listed below. Roger Myers seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

a. Stanwood High School Volleyball Team Camp at Western Washington University, July 6-9, and July 21-24, 2016, Bellingham, Washington,
b. Stanwood High School Associated Student Body Officers Mount Olympus Leadership Camp, July 12-17, 2016, Randle, Washington
c. Stanwood High School Percussion Ensemble Drum Camp at Central Washington University, July 15-16, 2016, Ellensburg, Washington,

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS

Board members expressed their enjoyment of the graduation ceremonies.

Roger Myers shared his experiences from attending the National School Boards Association Advocacy Institute in Washington D.C. June 12-14. There were four areas targeted to address members of Congress, 1) The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Implementation, 2) Child Nutrition Act Reauthorization (CNR), and 3) Perkins Career and Technical Education (CTE) Reauthorization, and 4) Federal Investments in Education. He had positive responses from Representative Rick Larsen, and Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray.

Al Schreiber encouraged board members to take the Washington State School Directors Association's (WSSDA) annual conference survey and wished teachers and staff to enjoy their summer break.

Ken Christoferson adjourned the regular meeting at 5:19 PM.
