BOARD OF DIRECTORS
MINUTES OF THE DECEMBER 6, 2016, REGULAR BOARD MEETING

CALL TO ORDER
Ken Christoferson called the meeting to order at 1:06 PM in the Administration & Resource Center Boardroom.

ROLL CALL
Board members in attendance were: Julie Dean, Natalie Hagglund, Roger Myers, Al Schreiber, and Ken Christoferson.

FLAG SALUTE
Roger Myers led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Julie Dean made a motion to approve the Agenda for the November 15, 2016, Regular Board Meeting. Natalie Hagglund seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Roger Myers made a motion to approve the Minutes of the November 1, 2016, Regular Board Meeting. Al Schreiber seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

REORGANIZATION OF BOARD
Ken Christoferson announced that the Board's annual reorganization was open for nominations.

Roger Myers nominated Julie Dean for President. Al Schreiber seconded the nomination. There were no other nominations. The vote for Julie Dean was called; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

Julie Dean called for nominations for the Vice President. Ken Christoferson nominated Al Schreiber. Roger Myers seconded the nomination. There were no other nominations. The vote for Al Schreiber was called; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

Roger Myers thanked Ken for his many years as Board President and for being a leader for the Board.

Ken Christoferson thanked everyone for their support and commented how each board member plays a vital role for the Board to be successful.

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS
Annie Peterson, Snohomish County Health District, updated the Board on the progress of the grant to provide information to our youth in the prevention of nicotine use and other inhalants. Two outreach workers will be presenting information to Port Susan Middle School students December 8-9, and to Stanwood High School students on December 14.

Roger Myers suggested adding a school board member to the Snohomish County board.

SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT
Dr. Jean Shumate introduced the following reports:

DONATIONS
Natalie Hagglund presented the donations, as follows:
1. Stanwood Lacrosse donated 30 Lacrosse sticks with soft balls, valued at 276.67, to the physical education program at Cedarhome Elementary.
2. Elger Bay Elementary PTA donated $1,100 to Elger Bay Elementary to support educational opportunities for students in outdoor experiences and classroom enrichment.
3. Stanwood Elementary PTO donated the transportation costs, $1,643.88, to Stanwood Elementary for the following field trips: Grade 5 students to Camp Seymour in Gig Harbor, Grade 3 students to Western Washington University in Bellingham, Grade 1 students to Seattle Center for science exploration, and Grade 4 students to learn history at a farm in Snohomish.
4. Stanwood-Camano Soap Box Derby (Randy and Marla Heagle) donated a Paragon Commercial Theater 12-ounce Popcorn Machine, valued at $1,000, to Utsalady Elementary.
5. Stanwood Middle School PTO donated a Cosmopolitan Electrol 14'x14' Matte White Projection Screen, valued at $2,347.45, to Stanwood Middle School. The projection screen will be used in the gymnasium.

DECEMBER ENROLLMENT
Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, reported on December 2016 enrollment. There was 4,376.83 FTE (Full Time Equivalent) students enrolled, which averaged 127.89 FTE over budget. Natalie Hagglund would like to learn the reason that the high school's enrollment declined. Dr. Shumate responded that she would get the information to Natalie.

OCTOBER FINANCIAL REPORT
Gary Platt reported on the financial reports for the month of October 2016.

Natalie Hagglund made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items 1-19, listed below. Al Schreiber seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS
Ken Christoferson commented on the Washington State School Directors Association Conference (WSSDA) that was attended by all board members and he said the presentations were great and looks forward to sharing information in January. Ken also congratulated Julie Dean for being elected president of the Board.

Board members wished everyone a Merry Christmas.

Julie Dean appreciated the opportunity to attend the WSSDA Conference and mentioned that there were a number of student representatives on different panels.
