BOARD OF DIRECTORS
MINUTES OF THE SEPTEMBER 7, 2010, REGULAR BOARD MEETING
 
CALL TO ORDER
Roger Myers called the meeting to order at 12:00 PM in the Administration & Resource Center boardroom. Board members in attendance were Ken Christoferson, Julie Dean, Darlene Hartley, Pat Patterson, and Roger Myers. Pat Patterson led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA 
Julie Dean made a motion to approve the agenda. Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Pat Patterson made a motion to approve the Minutes of the August 17, 2010, Regular Board Meeting. Ken Christoferson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved.

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS
Audience members did not participate.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

DONATIONS AND RECOGNITIONS
Darlene Hartley read the donations from Lifetouch National School Studios and Pat Logen, community member. Darlene Hartley introduced Christine Gruver, principal at Stanwood High School, who recognized Kay Adams, Stanwood High School security officer, for receiving the 2009-10 Washington School Safety Organizations Security Officer of the Year award.

ENROLLMENT AND STAFFING UPDATE
Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, reported that the unofficial student enrollment was 4,710 Full Time Equivalent (FTE), 120 FTE less than last year.  The official count on enrollment would be done on September 8th.  Mr. Platt said changes in staffing, due to class sizes, occurred at the kindergarten levels; eight families with fifth grade students at Stanwood Elementary volunteered to transfer their student to Twin City Elementary to alleviate crowding; and a new 2nd/3rd grade class was added at Twin City Elementary.  Dr. Linda Littlefield, Director of Human Resources, said the administration would be carefully monitoring class sizes.

CONSENT AGENDA
Darlene Hartley made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items 1-7, listed below.  Pat Patterson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.
1.    Donations
2.    Stanwood High School Field Trip for Drum Line Camp, July 16-17, 2010, Ellensburg, Washington
3.    Running Start Program Agreement with Bellingham Technical College District No. 25
4.    Capital Outlay Expenditure from the Transportation Vehicle Fund for Buses
5.    Contract with Garland Company, Inc. for Reroofing Stanwood High School Stadium and Twin City Elementary Complete
6.    Second Reading/Adoption of Revised Policy 6530 Insurance
7.    Personnel Consent Agenda

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS
Roger Myers thanked Ken Christoferson for representing the Board at the Bob Larson Stadium dedication.

Ken Christoferson said the Bob Larson family appreciated the dedication ceremonies and were very honored.  Ken also said he was grateful for parents’ flexibility during changes and hope that students are the least impacted.

Pat Patterson commended Dr. Shaaf for riding the shuttle bus with the 5th grade students from Stanwood Elementary to Twin City Elementary.  He also shared that his son was beginning the middle school years.

Darlene Hartley said that she visited every school on first day of school with Dr. Shumate.  She enjoyed visiting with staff and students.  She observed that they each appeared happy in their own climate and culture, which is a good safe learning environment.  Mrs. Hartley also added her appreciation of Ken representing the Board at the dedication.

Roger Myers announced that the Washington State School Directors’ Association (WSSDA) Regional meeting would be held September 28th in Anacortes and the WSSDA Annual Conference would be held in Spokane, November 17-20, 2010.  Board members were asked to contact Joy Rusko to register.

Dr. Shumate said the new student advisors would likely be at the next meeting.

Roger Myers adjourned the Regular Meeting at 12:25 PM.
