STANWOOD-CAMANO SCHOOL DISTRICT
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
MINUTES OF THE OCTOBER 19, 2010, REGULAR BOARD MEETING
 
CALL TO ORDER
Roger Myers called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. in the Administration & Resource Center boardroom.  Board members in attendance were Ken Christoferson, Julie Dean, Darlene Hartley, and Roger Myers.  Pat Patterson was absent and excused.

CLOSED SESSION
Roger Myers excused the Board at 6:00 p.m. to convene in a closed session for planning and adopting the strategy or position to be taken during the course of collective bargaining for approximately one hour.

RECONVENED
President Myers reconvened the regular meeting at 7:00 p.m.  Darlene Hartley led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA 
Julie Dean made a motion to approve the agenda.  Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Ken Christoferson made a motion to approve the Minutes of the October 5, 2010, Regular Board Meeting.  Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.  

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS
There was no audience participation.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

DONATIONS
Whitney Hensel, student advisor, read the donations from Totem Publications, IGA, and Kimberly Clark Foundation.

RECOGNITIONS
On behalf of the Board of Directors, Joy Rusko, Secretary to the Superintendent, presented the September Classified Employees of the Month award to Stanwood Middle School’s office staff, Carol Covert, Lynell Lewis, and Toshi Thorne. The Teacher of the Month award was presented to Kathy Tredo, 5th grade teacher at Stanwood Elementary. Sponsors of the award program, Sterling Savings Bank and Lenz Enterprises, provided gift certificates from Dos Reales and Stanwood Cinemas.

AUGUST FINANCIAL REPORT
Mr. Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, reviewed the Financial Report for the month of August 1010. The 2009-10 fiscal year was closed and Mr. Platt reviewed the executive summary, manager’s reports, General Fund balance comparisons, revenues, and expenditures. He explained and gave details on the remainder of the funding categories: Capital Projects, Debt Service, Associated Student Body, Transportation Vehicle, and Private Purpose Trust. Mr. Platt also explained the budget capacity activities and balances, the food service program report and the grants and apportionment report.

CONSENT AGENDA
Roger Myers noted the personnel agenda was revised. Darlene Hartley made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items 1-5, listed below.  Julie Dean seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

STUDENT ADVISORS REPORT
Whitney Hensel, Lincoln Hill High School senior, said that the after school credit retrieval program starts November 9th.

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS
Ken Christoferson shared his approval of the August budget report, which was more positive than projected. He also thanked Lloy Schaaf and Mike Olson for their role in providing a community forum on heroin issues.

Darlene Hartley concurred with Mr. Christoferson and commented that other school districts in Washington face similar issues.

Julie Dean also thanked parent, Gina Burrill, for sharing her personal story at the community forum.

Whitney Hensel, student advisor, commented that she hopes people can learn from the community forum.

ADJOURNMENT
Roger Myers adjourned the Regular Meeting at 7:53 p.m.
