BOARD OF DIRECTORS

MINUTES OF THE FEBRUARY 15, 2011, REGULAR BOARD MEETING

CALL TO ORDER

Roger Myers called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. in the Administration & Resource Center boardroom. Board members in attendance were Ken Christoferson, Julie Dean, Pat Patterson, Darlene Hartley, and Roger Myers.

EXECUTIVE SESSION

Roger Myers excused the Board at 6:30 p.m. to convene in an executive session to review the performance of a staff member for approximately 30 minutes.

RECONVENE 

Mr. Myers reconvened the Regular Board Meeting at 7:02 p.m. Student Advisor, Jordan Taylor was present and Whitney Hensel, was absent. Barb Marsh, Stanwood Middle School Principal, led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

Julie Dean made a motion to approve the agenda. Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Darlene Hartley made a motion to approve the Minutes of the February 1, 2011, Regular Board Meeting. Ken Christoferson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved. Pat Patterson recused himself because he did not attend the board meeting on February 1st.

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS

There was no audience participation.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

DONATIONS AND RECOGNITIONS

Jordan Taylor, student advisor, read the donations from Livestock Master Foundation and recognitions for Port Susan Middle School food service department and Stanwood High School students:

  1. Samantha Tichota – Poetry Out Loud;
  2. Jon Munck, Micha, Losee, Jeff Tasky, Caleb Schwarze, Dean Bretland, Austin Michl, and Aaron Kroeze – Chess Team
  3. Savannah Phillips – Washington Aerospace Scholars Program
  4. Cassandra Mather, Whitney Weinert, Kalina Eveland, Shannon Gee and Laura Charboneau – Girls’ Wrestling
  5. Zach Schut, Jarred Studley, and Kyle Bennett – Boys’ Wrestling
  6. Matt Roe, Cameron Chaplik, David Escobar, Justin Murrell, Cole Farnsworth, Kevin Escobar, Jacob Land, Wade Weinert, and Hayden Geisbrecht – Boys Swim
  7. Girls’ Basketball team in District play-off competition
  8. Boys’ Basketball varsity team won 4A State Academic Championship with a combined Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.670.

Shirley Lanum, district kitchen manager, shared the Excellence Award received from Snohomish Health District in the category of School/Industry/Institution.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, Joy Rusko, Secretary to the Superintendent, introduced the student and staff awards. 

The Shining Star awards were presented to students Mackenzie Spencer, Stanwood Middle School, and Miguel Luna, Twin City Elementary.

The Classified Employee of the Month award for January was presented to Diane Anderson, para-educator at Port Susan Middle School.

The Teacher of the Month award for January was presented to Julie Spores and Diane Wood, Utsalady Elementary.

RECESS

Mr. Myers recessed the meeting for 5 minutes. He reconvened the meeting at 7:45 p.m.

FINANCIAL REPORT

Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services presented the Financial Report for the month of January. He reviewed the Executive Summary.

CONSENT AGENDA

Ken Christoferson made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items 1-5, listed below. Pat Patterson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

STUDENT ADVISORS REPORT

Jordan Taylor gave an update on high school sports, announced the names of the students who signed college contracts, Charles Dexter (football – University of Washington), Minna Fields (track and field – Lipscomb University), Matt Roe (swimming – University of Las Vegas) and said the Tolo Dance would be held on March 12th. Jordan said that he is pursuing his college education at Western Washington University or Central Washington University or possibly at community colleges to play basketball.

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS

Ken Christoferson thanked Dr. Shumate and staff for hosting the special meeting with the Legislators on Saturday, February 12. He said the District has integrity with fiscal management and he is proud of all the staff and the community that supports us.

Pat Patterson praised the food service staff throughout the district for receiving the award from the Snohomish Health District.

Darlene Hartley thanked student advisor Jordan Taylor for participating in the meeting and thanked staff for hosting the special meeting. She also said she appreciated the input from booster club members at Utsalady Elementary regarding the budget.

Julie Dean announced that the community meeting on budget impacts would be held on Thursday, February 17th at Elger Bay Elementary library at 6:30 PM.

Roger Myers also thanked the staff for managing the budget so responsibly; noting other districts are not as fortunate.

ADJOURNMENT

Roger Myers adjourned the Regular Meeting at 8:00 p.m.
