BOARD OF DIRECTORS

MINUTES OF THE JANUARY 3, 2012, REGULAR BOARD MEETING

CALL TO ORDER

Roger Myers, President of the Board, called the Regular Board Meeting to order at 12:00 PM in the Administration & Resource Center boardroom. Board members in attendance were Julie Dean, Ken Christoferson, and Roger Myers. Pat Patterson arrived at 12:01 PM. Darlene Hartley was absent and excused. Christine Gruver, Stanwood High School Principal, led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

Julie Dean made a motion to approve the Agenda for the January 3, 2012, Regular Board Meeting. Ken Christoferson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Ken Christoferson made a motion to approve the Minutes of the December 6, 2011, Regular Board Meeting. Julie Dean seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS

There were no comments by audience members.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

DONATIONS AND RECOGNITIONS

Julie Dean read the donations from Robert Riner Studios, The Village Photographer, Walmart Superstore, Stephanie Snyder and Richard Hasset, Jeff Pettit, Kimberly Clark, and The Tree Farm.

Dr. Jean Shumate read a letter of recognition from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) to staff, parents, and students regarding the district’s increased graduation rate. Dan Newell, Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education and School Improvement at OSPI stated that the graduation increases in both on-time and extended graduation rates over the past three years were impressive. Christine Gruver, principal at Stanwood High School, and Dan Johnston, principal at Lincoln Hill High School, told the Board members that the graduation rate increase was from 82% to 94% in the last three years. Both principals expressed how system-wide, district improvement was a factor. They gave examples, such as: a clear focus on communication and accountability between students, parents and staff; use of specific data to see how improvements can be made; interventions, assistance and support for students in need; and professional development Learning Walks and 5 Dimensions of Teaching and Learning have all contributed to the success of student learning district-wide.

Board members expressed their appreciation to everyone for the outstanding work that has contributed in students’ success.

Dr. Shumate added her congratulations.

NOVEMBER FINANCIAL REPORT

Mr. Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, reviewed the financial report for the month of November 2011. He noted that payroll was less than last year due to staff reductions. He also said that an enrollment report for January would be available later in the afternoon and information would be sent to Board members via an email.

CONSENT AGENDA

Pat Patterson made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items 1- 4, listed below. Ken Christoferson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

  1. Donations.
  2. Amended State Purchasing Cooperative Intergovernmental Agreement from the State of Washington Department of General Administration to the State of Washington Department of Enterprise Services.
  3. Personnel Consent Agenda.
  4. Bills and Payroll.

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS

Julie Dean said she was excited and ready to get back into the school schedule.

Pat Patterson said the Lights of Christmas at Warm Beach Camp hosted a record, 72,000 people. He also welcomed two students that plans to enroll at Lincoln Hill High School.

Ken Christoferson was happy to start the New Year hearing the report on graduation rate increases.

ADJOURNMENT

Roger Myers adjourned the Regular Meeting at 12:34 PM.
