MINUTES OF THE FEBRUARY 7, 2012, SPECIAL BOARD MEETING
CALL TO ORDER
Roger Myers, President of the Board, called the Regular Board Meeting to order at 12:00 PM in the Administration & Resource Center boardroom. Board members in attendance were Julie Dean, Ken Christoferson, Darlene Hartley, and Roger Myers. Pat Patterson arrived at 12:05 PM. Director Darlene Hartley led the Pledge of Allegiance.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Julie Dean made a motion to approve the Agenda for the February 7, 2012, Regular Board Meeting. Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Ken Christoferson made a motion to approve the Minutes of the January 24, 2012, Regular Board Meeting. Julie Dean seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved. Pat Patterson abstained from the vote because he was absent from the meeting.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
DONATIONS AND RECOGNITIONS
Julie Dean read the donation from TerraCycle, Inc.
Lloy Schaaf, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, announced that Stanwood High School and Lincoln Hill High School received the Special Recognition Award for Improvement under the 2011 Washington Achievement Award from The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and the State Board of Education. The Improvement Award recognizes high-performing schools based on two-year averages identified by the Washington’s Achievement Index. Dr. Schaaf said that each school met and exceeded expectations and their efforts have been rewarded at the state level. She praised Christine Gruver, Principal at Stanwood High School and Dan Johnston, Principal at Lincoln Hill High School for their leadership and hard work. Each principal commended and recognized their staff, for their commitment, dedication, and attention to student learning on a daily basis. They also praised the students and parents for their efforts and success.
Superintendent Shumate announced that the OSPI recognition ceremony was scheduled for April 25, 2012, at Mariner High School.
ATHLETICS UPDATE
Erik Titus, Stanwood Middle School athletic coordinator, Tom Wilfong, Stanwood High School Athletic Director, and Keri Von Moos, Port Susan Middle School Athletic Director shared information on athletics’ participation, revenue, projects, reclassification, and events. Mr. Titus recognized the athletics’ support staff, Lynell Lewis, Sheryl Wark, and Wendy Roope, for their knowledge and focus to details of the programs. The food services staff was also recognized for providing appropriate verification information for parents and students to participate in athletic programs.
Board members appreciated and encouraged the staff to continue providing activities and athletics for all students.
ENROLLMENT
Mr. Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, reported on enrollment for the month of February 2012. He said enrollment was 4,562.94 FTE (Full Time Equivalent), 14.53 FTE over budget. He said there was a new state requirement to add the enrollment to the month of June.
CONSENT AGENDA
Darlene Hartley made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items 1- 3, listed below. Patrick Patterson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.
- Donations.
- Memorandum of Understanding with Stanwood-Camano Education Association (SCEA) for Special Education Preparation Time for the 2011-12 School Year.
- Personnel Consent Agenda.
- Bills and Payroll.

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS
Julie Dean said she attended the Jazz Night concert at the high school and said it was fabulous! She also noted the success of the high school basketball teams have been exciting.
Darlene Hartley expressed her delight in the Jazz Night music. She then shared her experience as a Spelling Bee judge at Twin City Elementary, and added she was proud of the student from Port Susan Middle School who performed at a community event.
Ken Christoferson was pleased that Stanwood High and Lincoln Hill High School received recognition for their success.
Roger Myers said that the girls’ basketball team was ranked #2 in the state. He also complimented the district’s teaching staff.

Roger Myers adjourned the Regular Meeting at 12:56 PM.
