BOARD OF DIRECTORS

MINUTES OF THE APRIL 17, 2012, REGULAR BOARD MEETING

Julie Dean, Vice President of the Board, called the Regular Board Meeting to order at 7:00 PM in the Administration & Resource Center boardroom. Board members in attendance were Ken Christoferson, Darlene Hartley, Pat Patterson and Julie Dean. Roger Myers and Josh Schuh, student advisor, was absent and excused. Julie Dean led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

Darlene Hartley made a motion to approve the Agenda for the April 17, 2012, Regular Board Meeting. Pat Patterson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Pat Patterson made a motion to approve the Minutes of the March 20, 2012, Regular Board Meeting. Ken Christoferson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS

John Russell, parent of high school cast members, read a proclamation from the cast of the Stanwood High School’s production of GREASE, requesting to perform a couple of musical numbers from the show for the benefit of the Stanwood-Camano School Board as a thank you for their continuing support of the Arts in our schools. Eight students performed three of the songs from GREASE.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Dr. Jean Shumate introduced the following reports:

DONATIONS

Hana Hushagen, Student Advisor, read the donation from Anne Gould.

RECOGNITIONS

Hana Hushagen and Pat Patterson read the student recognitions.

Ray Mather, Stanwood High School woodshop teacher, introduced students Garrett Eveland, Easton Hodges, Tyler Landau, and Kris Cruse and their woodshop projects that were on display in the boardroom. Mr. Mather said that many of the projects received awards at the annual woodworking show, Woodfest, in Sedro Woolley. He said it was the best showing for Stanwood students, receiving four top honors. Kris Cruse’s library/glass door cabinet won Best of Show and the Mike Chandler Judges Choice Award. Mr. Mather also praised Kris for his assistance in the woodshop and providing mentorship to other students.

Joy Rusko, Secretary to the Superintendent, introduced the Shining Star Awards and employee awards on behalf of the Board of Directors, as follows:

SHINING STAR AWARDS: Colleen Keller, Utsalady Elementary Principal, and Julie Wheeler, 5th grade teacher, recognized Jake Spores as the Shining Star at Utsalady Elementary. Jake is known for his willingness to do anything, his hard work on a daily basis, and for being kind.

Mike Olson, Twin City Elementary Principal, and Marlene Shoe, 4th grade teacher, recognized Aaron Wilmot as the Shining Star at Twin City Elementary. Mrs. Shoe recognized Aaron for his kind soul and his tenacity to meet any challenge he may face.

Emily Hoyt, Port Susan Middle School 8th grader, was recognized by Principal Mike Olson and Counselor Cindy Taggart-Deffinbaugh (T-D). Mr. Olson shared information provided by some of Emily’s teachers stating that she is dedicated, hardworking and demonstrates leadership.

CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH FOR FEBRUARY: Bev Meadows-Lein, Stanwood High School Paraeducator, was recognized by Principal Christine Gruver and Tina Latvala, teacher.

 CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH FOR MARCH: Stacey Kirn, Twin City Elementary Paraeducator, was recognized by Principal Mike Olson and Judy Birk, Librarian.

RECESS

Julie Dean recessed the meeting at 8:03 PM to excuse guests. She resumed the Regular Meeting at 8:08 PM.

ENROLLMENT

Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, reported on the enrollment for the month of April 2012. He said enrollment was 4,539.98 FTE (Full Time Equivalent), a decrease of 26.33 FTE from the month of March.

FINANCIAL UPDATE

Mr. Platt gave the Financial Report for the month of March 2012. He reviewed the Executive Summary including the General Fund balance, revenues and expenditures.

  1. Cooperative Agreement with Catholic Community Services of Western Washington for Mental Health Services.

STUDENT ADVISOR REPORT

Hana Hushagen said that students have returned to Lincoln Hill High School refreshed after Spring Break; graduation would be June 11, at 6:00 PM; and secretaries will be honored on April 25th.

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS

Ken Christoferson thanked the co-chairs of the Citizens for Stanwood-Camano Schools on the successful levy campaign and also acknowledged the success of student accomplishments.

Julie Dean noted that Josh Schuh, student advisor, was absent and announced that the regular board meeting on May 1st would begin at 7:00 pm.

Dr. Shumate announced that the levy appeared to be passing.

ADJOURNMENT

Julie Dean adjourned the Regular Meeting at 8:20 PM.
