BOARD OF DIRECTORS

MINUTES OF THE MAY 15, 2012, REGULAR BOARD MEETING

Student Advisors Hana Hushagen and Josh Schuh, under the direction of Roger Myers, Board President, facilitated the May 15, 2012, Board Meeting.

Josh Shuch called the Regular Board Meeting to order at 7:00 PM in the Administration & Resource Center boardroom. Board members in attendance were Ken Christoferson, Darlene Hartley, Roger Myers and Julie Dean. Director Pat Patterson was absent and excused. Hana Hushagen and Josh Schuh, Student Advisors, were present. Josh Schuh led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

Roger Myers made a motion to approve the Agenda for the May 15, 2012, Regular Board Meeting. Julie Dean seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Darlene Hartley made a motion to approve the Minutes of the May 1, 2012, Regular Board Meeting. Ken Christoferson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS

Leigh Anne Francisco, Stanwood, requested information regarding special education programs relating to 5th grade outdoor education camp.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Dr. Jean Shumate introduced the following reports:

DONATIONS

Roger Myers read the donations from Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. and Stanwood Elementary PTA.

Don Vennetti, Director of Food Services, accepted $1,000.00 donation from Joe Bolewicz, owner of Stanwood Camano Physical Therapy. Mr. Bolewicz explained the funds have accumulated from a $5.00 donation fee from the children participating in the Coach Joe’s Fitness Academy, an after school program for students to learn and develop life-long fitness through movement. The donation will be used to support the summer food service program providing healthy snacks. Parents and participants of the fitness academy accompanied Mr. Bolewicz in presenting the donation.

RECOGNITIONS

Roger Myers read the recognition from Puget Sound Blood Center praising Stanwood High School staff and George Colby’s Leadership students for hosting three blood drives.

HISTORY CLUB: Sabrina Shaw, History Club Advisor, introduced History Club presenters: Sean Dolan, Marlee Raible, Emily Najar, Maggie Phillips and Madalyn Schei. They shared information about their History Day projects, which earned placement at the National History Day competition in Washington D.C.

STUDENT ADVISORS: The Board of Directors recognized Hana Hushagen and Josh Schuh, for their service on the Board as Student Advisors. They were presented with a certificate of achievement and an engraved award made by the high school Technology Student Association club.

EMPLOYEE AWARDS: Joy Rusko, Secretary to the Superintendent, introduced the employee awards on behalf of the Board of Directors, as follows:

CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH FOR APRIL: Lisa Teichgrab, Stanwood-Camano School District’s Food Service Secretary, was recognized by Don Vennetti, Director of Food Services and Shirley Lanum, Kitchen Manager.

TEACHER OF THE MONTH FOR APRIL: Vicki Sadusky, Port Susan Middle School Psychologist, was recognized by Susan Fortner, and Gaylynn Beuthien. Principal Mike Olson and Keri Von Moos, Assistant Principal, also recognized Vicki on behalf of Lori Johnson, Sheri Schroeder, Cyndie Hutchison, and Diane Anderson, who were unable to attend.

Dr. Shumate presented each of the award recipients with gift certificates from Dos Reales and Stanwood Cinemas. Board members presented certificates of achievement and words of praise.

RETIREES: Dr. Linda Littlefield, Executive Director of Human Resources, recognized the district’s retirees as follows. Classified Staff – Mike Upton and Susan Moothart; Certificated Staff – Sally Ryan and Robin Robinson. (Unable to attend: Jan Holland, Jill Stevens, and Cynthia Wagner.) Dr. Littlefield shared employment highlights for each retiree and presented engraved awards made by the high school Technology Student Association members.

RECESS/RECEPTION

Hana Hushagen recessed the meeting at 8: 22 PM to celebrate the award recipients, retirees. Josh Schuh resumed the Regular Meeting at 8:33 PM.

FINANCIAL UPDATE

Mr. Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, gave the Financial Report for the month of April 2012. He reviewed the Executive Summary: enrollment, General Fund balance, revenues, expenditures, payroll and nonemployee related costs. He noted that the enrollment projection was very close to budget.

Ken Christoferson made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items 1-5, listed below. Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

STUDENT ADVISOR REPORT

Hana Hushagen said that the seniors (grade 12 students) are completing course work and looking forward to graduation ceremonies on June 11th. A choir concert was scheduled for May 16th at the high school.

Josh Schuh reported that the Advanced Placement tests were near completion; Advisory Portfolios were due on May 17th; and the high school graduation would be held on June 8th.

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS

Ken Christoferson complimented the student advisors, History Day students, and all of the people who diligently work for the district. He said it was a privilege to serve on the Board.

Darlene Hartley told the student advisors that the Board would celebrate with them on June 8th and 11th. A time to remember from kindergarten and beyond; the contributions they have made.

Julie Dean reflected on the meaning of graduation and all the people involved in students’ lives. She hoped the students were proud to be a part of the excellent education that Stanwood-Camano School District provides.

Roger Myers commented on the great meeting and addressed the student advisors that graduation was the beginning of their lives and an opportunity to thank a teacher that made a difference in their lives. He also thanked Dr. Littlefield for her retiree recognitions along with the assistance of Sandy Kintner and Rita Kellerman.

Josh Schuh thanked the Board for the opportunity to be one of the Student Advisors. He said it was a great learning experience. He also said he was grateful for the education from Stanwood High School and felt it had paved the future.

Hana Hushagen also expressed her sentiments on being a student advisor an was very thankful for the experience.

ADJOURNMENT

Hana Hushagen adjourned the Regular Meeting at 8:45 PM.
