BOARD OF DIRECTORS

MINUTES OF THE JUNE 5, 2012, REGULAR BOARD MEETING

Roger Myers called the Regular Board Meeting to order at 11:30 AM in the Administration & Resource Center boardroom. Board members in attendance were Ken Christoferson, Darlene Hartley, Pat Patterson, Julie Dean, and Roger Myers.

EXECUTIVE SESSION

Roger Myers excused the Board to Executive Session at 11:32 AM to review the performance of a staff member for approximately 30 minutes.

RECONVENE

Roger Myers reconvened the meeting at 12:00 PM. Pat Patterson led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

Julie Dean made a motion to approve the Agenda for the June 5, 2012, Regular Board Meeting. Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Ken Christoferson made a motion to approve the Minutes of the May 15, 2012, Regular Board Meeting. Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously. Pat Patterson recused himself because he was not present at the meeting.

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS

There were no comments by audience members.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Dr. Jean Shumate introduced the following reports:

DONATIONS

Darlene Hartley read the donations from Jeff Pettit, Twin City Elementary PTA, Nike Factory Outlet, Linda Frietas, and Joe Bolewicz. 

RECOGNITIONS

Darlene Hartley recognized students Kaci Jones: first place in State discus throw and Samantha Helmick and Dylan Thrush: third place at Washington State University Imagine Tomorrow competition.

Superintendent Jean Shumate introduced Kathy Buckingham, Elger Bay Elementary paraeducator, as Classified Employee of the Year. Tony Warner, Sterling Bank Manager and sponsor of the award, presented gift certificates from Dos Reales, Stanwood Cinemas, and Snow Goose Bookstore. Kathy also received an engraved award trophy and certificate of recognition from the Board of Directors.

SUMMER FOOD SERVICES/YMCA UPDATE

Don Vennetti, Director of Food Services, explained the Summer Meals for Kids program provided by the the USDA, Food and Nutrition Services and through the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, Child Nutrition Services. Free breakfast and lunch will be served to all children 18 years and younger, Monday through Thursdays at Twin City Elementary. Breakfast will be served from 9 AM until 10:00 AM and lunch will be served 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM.

Theresa Metzger, Chair of the Stanwood-Camano YMCA Organizing Committee, shared that the YMCA would like to demonstrate their support to our community. On Mondays and Wednesdays the Snohomish County YMCA of Marysville will provide staff and free summer activities for children during the Summer Meals for Kids program at Twin City Elementary.

Board members shared their appreciation to provide the youth of the community positive opportunities for activities and meals.

ENROLLMENT

Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, reported on the enrollment for the month of June. Due to new state enrollment reporting formulas for 2011-12, this was the first time enrollment was reported in June. Mr. Platt noted that the budget projection for the year was down by only one student.

BUDGET UPDATE

Gary Platt described and discussed drafts of the four other funds besides General Fund: capital projects, associated student body, debt service, and transportation vehicle. System reports would be available for next reporting period.

- Captial Projects Fund – included the energy improvement work.

- Associated Student Body Fund - changed pay-to-participate fees accounting to ASB funds.

- Debt Service Fund – to meet payment requirements on levy, capital projects usage. Funds are restricted and not available for salaries.

- Transportation Vehicle Fund – grant for electric bus was not approved, two buses are on order.

CONSENT AGENDA

Pat Patterson made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items 1-7, listed below. Ken Christoferson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

Stanwood High School Field Trips: (a) Girls Golf State Tournament, May 21-24, 2012, Spokane, Washington; (b) Boys Golf State Tournament, May 21-24, 2012,Spokane, Washington; (c) Girls Tennis State Tournament, May 24-26, 2012, Richland, Washington; (d) Cheerleading Camp, June 25-28, 2012, Ground Mound, Washington; (e) Boys Basketball Camp, July 5-8, 2012, Ellensburg, Washington; (f) Track State Tournament, May 24-26, 2012, Tacoma, Washington.
  3. Revised Stanwood High School Athletic/Activity Code – May 2012.
  4. Snohomish County Licensing Agreement for Ballot Drop Box Location on Stanwood-Camano School District Property.
  5. Northwest Educational Service District 189 Data Processing Services for Northwest Regional Data Center 2012-13.
  6. Personnel Consent Agenda.
  7. NWESD 189 Interlocal Cooperative Agreement for Drop-out Reengagement Program 2012-13.

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS

Board members expressed their excitement to participate in the upcoming graduation ceremonies

Ken Christoferson thanked Don Vennetti for his role in providing the free Summer Meals for Kids program.

Dr. Shumate requested input from the Board on a date and agenda item for a retreat. The Board Members determined that July 3, 2012, would be best.

Dr. Shumate said that the Washington State School Directors Association (WSSDA) wanted the Board to host the WSSDA Regional Meeting in Stanwood, October 8th. The Board agreed to host the meeting.

ADJOURNMENT

Roger Myers adjourned the Regular Meeting at 12:43 PM.
