BOARD OF DIRECTORS

MINUTES OF THE SEPTEMBER 4, 2012, REGULAR BOARD MEETING

CALL TO ORDER

Julie Dean, Vice-president, called the Regular Board Meeting to order at 12:00 PM in the Administration & Resource Center boardroom.

ROLL CALL

Board members in attendance were Ken Christoferson, Pat Patterson, Darlene Hartley and Julie Dean. Roger Myers was absent and excused.

FLAG SALUTE
Julie Dean led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

Darlene Hartley made a motion to approve the Agenda for the September 4, 2012, Regular Board Meeting. Pat Patterson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Ken Christoferson made a motion to approve the Minutes of the August 21, 2012, Regular Board Meeting. Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS

There were no comments by audience members.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Dr. Jean Shumate introduced the following reports:

DONATIONS

Darlene Hartley read the donations from Camilla Wicks, Cedarhome Elementary - $6,100.98; Elger Bay Elementary $2,817.08, Twin City Elementary $5,358.64, Stanwood Elementary PTA $1,814.99, Utsalady Booster Club $4,145.06, Port Susan Middle School $1,014.47, Stanwood Middle School PTO $1,574.82, and Stanwood Booster Club $1,984.08.

RECOGNITIONS

  1. Darlene Hartley read that the Professional Educator Standards Board recognized Judith Robinson.
  2. Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, presented a certificate of recognition to the District from the Children’s Alliance and End Childhood Hunger for providing summer meals for kids. Mr. Platt announced that 645 meals were served to students and 186 adult meals were purchased.
  3. Keri Von Moos, Port Susan Middle School Vice-principal/Athletic Director and YMCA liaison, introduced Theresa Metzger, Chair of the Stanwood-Camano YMCA Organizing Committee, who presented a handmade tree “thank you” plaque made by parents of kids that attended the summer meals program and YMCA activities. The Marysville Y provided activities two days a week in a partnership with the summer meals program. Theresa said she was pleasantly surprised to have an average of 75 kids participating per day. Dr. Shumate thanked Theresa and said it was a great opportunity for our students and parents. Board members expressed their appreciation.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

Superintendent Jean Shumate announced that the first day of school was in process. She visited the maintenance and transportation departments very early in the morning and visited all of the schools with Dr. Littlefield and Dr. Schaaf. Gary Platt said the preliminary enrollment was below budget projections by 6.4 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) and said that enrollment often fluctuates during the first few days of school. An additional .5 kindergarten teacher would be hired at Elger Bay Elementary to accommodate class size. The official count day would be Friday, September 7th and an enrollment report would be sent to Board members.

CONSENT AGENDA

Darlene Hartley made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items one through seven, listed below. Pat Patterson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

  1. First Reading of Revised Personnel Policy 5251, Conflicts of Interest
  2. Interlocal Agreement for Fire Service Training with Island County Fire District #1 for 2012-13 School Year
  3. Agreement with Marysville YMCA for use of Swimming Pool for the 2012-13
    Swim Season
  4. 6.2012-15 Collective Bargaining Agreement with Stanwood-Camano Education Association and Memorandum of Understanding for New Teacher Evaluation Project and Memorandum of Understanding for Temporary Agreement for Elementary Staff to Take Leave for Less Than Half of a Day
  5. Personnel Consent Agenda

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS

Darlene Hartley described her grandson’s consideration of what he should wear for the first day of kindergarten, he said, “I think a tux.” Darlene explained that all special occasions deserved wearing a tuxedo.

Pat Patterson congratulated the District and Stanwood-Camano Education Association on the collective bargaining three-year agreement, which was approved on the Consent Agenda.

Ken Christoferson thanked Don Vennetti, Food Service Director, for providing the summer meals program. He stated that the summer meals program fills a need for the community.

Julie Dean stated that future YMCA programs would help to build a stronger community.

Julie Dean adjourned the Regular Meeting at 12:22 PM.
