MINUTES OF THE OCTOBER 16, 2012, REGULAR BOARD MEETING

CALL TO ORDER

Roger Myers, President, called the Regular Board Meeting to order at 7:00 PM in the Administration & Resource Center boardroom.

ROLL CALL

Board members in attendance were Darlene Hartley, Julie Dean, Ken Christoferson, Pat Patterson, and Roger Myers. Student Advisors, Elise Nowak and Jack Lund was also present.

FLAG SALUTE
Elise Nowak led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

Julie Dean made a motion to approve the Agenda for the October 16, 2012, Regular Board Meeting. Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Julie Dean made a motion to approve the Minutes of the October 2, 2012, Regular Board Meeting. Ken Christoferson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously. Roger Myers and Pat Patterson abstained from the vote because both were absent from the October 2nd board meeting.

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS

There were no comments from members of the audience.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Dr. Jean Shumate introduced the following reports:

DONATIONS

Jack Lund and Elisse Nowak, presented the donations from: National FFA Foundation on behalf of Dr. Colin Kertson, DVM $237.00, Wesley Hill $250.00 correction, Carrie and Donald Stanwyck $200.00, Patti and Bradley Barker $200.00, Livestock Master Foundation $3,000.00, Smokey Point Concrete $250.00, and Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians $8,400.00.

RECOGNITIONS

Joy Rusko, Secretary to the Superintendent, introduced the employee awards on behalf of the Board of Directors, as follows:

Classified Employee of the Month, September: Sharon Hanson, Title I Para-educator at Twin City Elementary was nominated by Katie Pickrell (unable to attend) and recognized by Principal Dan Johnston who also read the nomination. Dr. Jean Shumate presented Sharon with a framed picture award to hang at Twin City Elementary. Sponsor, Tony Warner, Sterling Bank Manager, presented gift certificates from Dos Reales and Stanwood Cinemas and Director Darlene Hartley presented Sharon with a certificate of achievement on behalf of the Board of Directors.

Teacher of the Month, September: Principal Dan Johnston recognized Joan Campbell, Port Susan Middle School Mathematics and Leadership Teacher. Her nominators, Chris Jadwin and Staci Lauinger and Monica McDaniel (unable to attend) read their nominations and Assistant Principal, Keri Von Moos read the nomination given by Sydney Sherrid who was unable to attend. Tony Warner presented the gift certificates from Dos Reales and Stanwood Cinemas, Dr. Shumate present the framed picture award, and Director Pat Patterson presented the certificate of achievement.

Roger Myers announced a recess at 7:19 PM to allow guests to leave. He reconvened the meeting at 7:21 PM.

FINANCIAL REPORT

Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, reviewed the monthly financial reports for August 2012. He reported on the Executive Summary, Manager’s Expenditure’s Report, Fund Balance Accounts and Food Service Program Report.

He noted that the transportation department was able to purchase supplies, materials, diesel, and motor oil for the 2012-13 school year and still reserved $85,000.00 and the district’s utilities costs were under budget from energy cost savings. Some of the funds were used to do additional projects this past summer.

CONSENT AGENDA

Pat Patterson made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items one through six, listed below. Ken Christoferson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

STUDENT ADVISORS REPORT

Elise Nowak reported that Lincoln Hill High School would participate in Red Ribbon Week, an alcohol, tobacco and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October in the United States. During the week of October 22-27, bracelets, ribbons, balloons, pledges to be healthy for self and others, a video and a 5k run on Saturday would remind students to be healthy.

Jack Lund announced Homecoming activities at Stanwood High School for the week of October 15-20, which included togas, coronation assembly, football game and homecoming dance. He reported that his tennis doubles match resulted with one win and one loss. 

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS

Board members expressed their appreciation for the information presented at the board retreat. Ken also stated he was pleased that the state audit for 2010-11 ended.

ADJOURNMENT

Roger Myers adjourned the Regular Meeting at 7:50 PM.
