BOARD OF DIRECTORS

MINUTES OF THE NOVEMBER 20, 2012, REGULAR BOARD MEETING

CALL TO ORDER

Roger Myers, President, called the Regular Board Meeting to order at 7:00 PM in the Administration & Resource Center boardroom.

ROLL CALL

Board members in attendance were Darlene Hartley, Julie Dean, Ken Christoferson, Pat Patterson, and Roger Myers. Elise Nowak, Student Advisor was present and Jack Lund was absent.

FLAG SALUTE
Tony Warner, Sterling Bank Manager led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

Julie Dean made a motion to approve the Agenda for the November 20, 2012, Regular Board Meeting. Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Darlene Hartley made a motion to approve the Minutes of the November 6, 2012, Special Audit Exit Conference Meeting. Ken Christoferson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously. Pat Patterson abstained from voting because he did not attend the meeting.

Ken Christoferson made a motion to approve the Minutes of the November 6, 2012, Regular Board Meeting. Julie Dean seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously. Pat Patterson abstained from voting because he was absent from the meeting.

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS

There were no comments from members of the audience.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Dr. Jean Shumate introduced the following reports:

DONATIONS

Elise Nowak presented the donations from Grant and Phyllis Gard (Vito Reso-tone clarinet value $400.00), Stillaguamish Grange (dictionaries value $396.00), Port Susan Middle School PTA ($320.00), Ohiopyle Prints ($276.24), Mr. and Mrs. Mark Crowley (Shop Smith value $2,523.99), and Stanwood 4A Booster Club ($1,819.16).

RECOGNITIONS

Elise Nowak read the recognition from Puget Sound Blood Center to Stanwood High School and Joy Rusko, Secretary to the Superintendent, introduced the Shining Star Awards and employee awards on behalf of the Board of Directors, as follows:

Shining Star Awards:

Cedarhome Elementary – Principal Jeff Lofgren and teacher, Kris Wayland, recognized Madi Howe, 5th grade student, for being responsible, having tenacity to complete homework, and being considerate of others.

Elger Bay Elementary – Principal Victor Hanzeli and teachers, Nicale Van Scoy and Stacy Johnson, recognized Ayla Gonzalez, 5th grade student for her outstanding progress. Ayla has become a leader and has a great sense of humor. 

Stanwood High School – Principal Christine Gruver and teachers, Robin Ringland and Ella Blackwood, recognized Flor Garcia, a senior, for her success against obstacles, work ethic, and desire for learning. 

Classified Employee of the Month, October:

Cindy Cutforth, Office Manager at Lincoln Hill High School/Lincoln Academy. Due to a schedule conflict Cindy’s recognition has been rescheduled to the December 4th board meeting.

Teacher of the Month, October: 

Madonna Konshuk and Bobbi Lemme (unable to attend), Stanwood High School ASSIST teachers, received recognition from Principal Christine Gruver who read their nomination written by Gayle Niermeyer, who was unable to attend.

The Board of Directors awarded certificates of achievement to all of the recipients. The sponsor of the awards, Tony Warner, Sterling Bank Manager, presented gifts and gift certificates from Snow Goose Bookstore, Viking Video, Dos Reales, and Stanwood Cinemas.

RECESS

Roger Myers announced a recess at 7:37 PM to allow guests to leave. He reconvened the meeting at 7:42 PM.

FINANCIAL REPORT

Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, reviewed the monthly financial reports for October 2012. He reported on the Executive Summary, Manager’s Expenditure’s Report, and Fund Balance Accounts.

CONSENT AGENDA

Julie Dean made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items one through six, listed below. Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

  2. Stanwood High School Field Trips: (a) Swim Team to State Competition, November 8-10, 2012, Federal Way, Washington.
  3. Second Reading/Adoption of Personnel Policy 5010, Nondiscrimination and Affirmative Action.

STUDENT ADVISORS REPORT

Elise Nowak described Lincoln Hill High School’s leadership plans, which includes a winter games series prior to winter break. 

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS

Ken Christoferson said the Annual Washington State School Directors Association (WSSDA) Conference meetings were good and well attended.

Darlene Hartley agreed with Ken and thought the conference was interesting. She enjoyed the breakout-sessions, which were relevant to issues throughout the state and appreciated the opportunity to attend.

Darlene and Julie also attended the “Letter of Intent” signing ceremony at the high school Performing Arts Center November 19th. Rachel Swartz signed to play basketball at Missouri State University and Emily Wayland signed with Oregon State University for rowing.

Julie Dean wished everyone a “Happy Thanksgiving.”

Roger Myers adjourned the Regular Meeting at 7:49 PM.
