BOARD OF DIRECTORS

MINUTES OF THE FEBRUARY 5, 2013, REGULAR BOARD MEETING

CALL TO ORDER

President Ken Christoferson called the Regular Board Meeting to order at 12:00 PM in the Administration & Resource Center boardroom.

ROLL CALL

Board members in attendance were Darlene Hartley, Ken Christoferson, Pat Patterson and Roger Myers. Julie Dean was absent and excused.

FLAG SALUTE
Ken Christoferson led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

Roger Myers made a motion to approve the Agenda for the February 5, 2013, Regular Board Meeting. Pat Patterson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Darlene Hartley made a motion to approve the Minutes of the January 15, 2013, Regular Board Meeting. Roger Myers seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS

There were no comments from members of the audience.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Dr. Jean Shumate introduced the following reports:

SCHOOL OF DISTINCTION AWARD

Dr. Jerry Jenkins, Superintendent of the Northwest Educational Service District 189, presented the School of Distinction Award, to Stanwood Elementary. Principal Barbara Marsh and Kate Mietus, reading specialist, accepted the award on behalf of the Stanwood Elementary staff and students. Dr. Jenkins explained that Stanwood Elementary received the award, for the second time, as one of 54 elementary schools representing the top 5% of improvement in reading and math. The Center for Educational Effectiveness created the award to recognize the highest improving schools in Washington State. Dr. Jenkins praised the Board of Directors and the district’s leadership, principals and teachers for setting high standards and challenging each other.

Barbara Marsh said she was honored to be principal at Stanwood Elementary. She complimented the staff for all of their hard work.

Board members proudly congratulated the staff and leadership at Stanwood Elementary for what they do for children.

DONATIONS

Darlene Hartley read the donations as follows: Elger Bay Elementary PTA ($243.54), Stanwood Booster Club ($8,116.43), New York Life Giving Campaign ($125.00), Mabana Flames Auxillary ($120.00), Lakeside Industries ($1,000.00), and Greg Stewart ($2,500.00).

RECOGNITIONS

Darlene Hartley read the recognitions from Puget Sound Blood Center and Scholastic Art Awards.

ATHLETICS UPDATE

Erik Titus, Stanwood Middle School Teacher, Tom Wilfong, Stanwood High School Athletic Director, and Keri Von Moos, Port Susan Middle School Athletic Director, presented an update on the athletics’ programs for their respective schools. They included student participation numbers, accomplishments, facility improvements and the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Grade Point Average Awards.

Mr. Titus thanked the support staff, Lynell Lewis, Wendy Roope, and Sheryl Wark, for all of their efforts behind the scenes. Tom Wilfong introduced the high school’s new Hall of Fame nomination process and Keri Von Moos said she would send the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association proposed amendments to the board members when available.

Board members complimented the presenters for the thorough update on the athletics’ programs.

ENROLLMENT REPORT

Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, reported that the total enrollment for the month of February was 4,338.08 Full Time Equivalent students. He said it was below projected budget by 44 Full Time Equivalent students. 

CONSENT AGENDA

Darlene Hartley made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items one through six, listed below. Pat Patterson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously. 

  1. Donations.
  2. Stanwood High School Field Trip for the Boys Swim Team State Tournament, February 14-16, 2013, Federal Way, Washington.
  3. Contract with Northwest Educational Service District 189 for Services with Northwest Regional Learning Center for Program Year 2012-13.
  4. Contract with Kelley Imaging Systems for Utsalady Elementary Copier Lease.
  5. Contract with the State of Washington Department of Licensing to Administer Written and Driving Examinations.
  6. Personnel Consent Agenda.

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS

Darlene Hartley thanked the district office staff for providing lunch for Board Members in their honor.

Ken Christoferson appreciated an invitation and attended a city economic meeting with Jean Shumate and Gary Platt. He said working together would benefit the community.

Roger Myers thanked the Lincoln Hill High School Leadership Students for the Thank You cards in recognition of Board Appreciation Month.

Jean Shumate said the district is working with the police and fire departments of Stanwood and Camano Island to strengthen the partnership.

ADJOURNMENT

Ken Christoferson adjourned the Regular Meeting at 12:50 PM.
