BOARD OF DIRECTORS

MINUTES OF THE FEBRUARY 19, 2013, REGULAR BOARD MEETING

CALL TO ORDER

President Ken Christoferson called the Regular Board Meeting to order at 7:00 PM in the Administration & Resource Center boardroom.

ROLL CALL

Board members in attendance were Darlene Hartley, Julie Dean, Roger Myers, and Ken Christoferson. Pat Patterson was absent and excused. Student Advisor Elise Nowak was present and Jack Lund was absent.

FLAG SALUTE
Jeff Lofgren, Cedarhome Elementary Principal, led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

Julie Dean made a motion to approve the Agenda for the February 19, 2013, Regular Board Meeting. Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Roger Myers made a motion to approve the Minutes of the February 5, 2013, Regular Board Meeting. Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously. Julie Dean abstained from the vote due to her absence at the February 5th Board Meeting.

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS

There were no comments from members of the audience.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Dr. Jean Shumate introduced the following reports:

DONATIONS AND RECOGNITIONS

Elise Nowak read the donations as follows: Cedarhome Elementary PTA ($123.84), Phillips 66 Company ($500.00), Jeff Pettit, Universal Aerospace Company ($7,500.00), Boeing Company ($577.00), Stanwood Elementary PTA ($1,736.51), Utsalady Booster Club ($556.92), Stanwood Booster Club (1,859.04), and Target Field Trip Grants Program ($700.00). According to Board Policy 6116, donations exceeding $500.00 must formally be approved in the Consent Agenda.

Elise Nowak read the recognitions for Stanwood High School Knowledge Bowl Team and the results of the Individual Events Festival for drama.

Joy Rusko, Secretary to the Superintendent introduced the following awards:

Classified Employees of the Month for January 2013 – Gary Forslund and Isaac Forslund, Cedarhome Elementary Custodians, were nominated and recognized by Mary Hoffman, Cedarhome Elementary Nurse. Principal Jeff Lofgren also recognized Gary and Isaac.

Teacher of the Month for January 2013 – Kurt Blom, Elger Bay Elementary Physical Education teacher was nominated and recognized by Jennifer Larson and children, Kaitlen, A.J., Madeline, Luke, and Jeremiah (Sisco) and Principal Victor Hanzeli.

The Board of Directors presented certificates of achievement to the award recipients and Dr. Shumate presented framed pictures of the award. Tony Warner, Sterling Bank Manager and sponsor, presented gift certificates from Dos Reales and Stanwood Cinemas. 

RECESS

Ken Christoferson recessed the meeting at 7:26 PM, for approximately five minutes, to allow guests to depart. He reconvened the meeting at 7:31 PM.

FINANCIAL REPORT

Superintendent Jean Shumate reported on the financial reports for the month of January 2013. She presented the Executive Summary as follows: there were 207 fewer students enrolled since January 2012; General Fund balance was $5,110,902; revenues were $18,132,505; and the non-employee related costs was higher than last year by 6 percent.

CONSENT AGENDA

Darlene Hartley made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items one through six, listed below. Julie Dean seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously. 

  1. Donations.
  2. Stanwood High School Wrestling Team Field Trip to State Competition, February 14-16, 2013, Tacoma, Washington.
  3. First Reading of Revised Student Policy 3231, Student Records.
  4. Purchase Authorization of Two 30-Passenger Buses, Two 21-Passenger Buses, and One 78-Passenger Bus.
  5. Personnel Consent Agenda.
  6. Bills and Payroll.

STUDENT ADVISORS REPORT

Elise Nowak said that Lincoln Hill High School was preparing for the High School Proficiency Exams and the student leadership team met with Don Vennetti, Director of Food Services, to discuss options for food services or delivery at the Lincoln Hill High School campus.

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS

Darlene Hartley and Ken Christoferson expressed their appreciation for the award recipients.

Julie Dean congratulated Stanwood Elementary for receiving the School of Distinction Award. She also praised the participants of the Port Susan Middle School Spelling Bee.

ADJOURNMENT

Board President, Ken Christoferson, adjourned the Regular Meeting at 7:39 PM.
