MINUTES OF THE MARCH 19, 2013, REGULAR BOARD MEETING

CALL TO ORDER

President Ken Christoferson called the Regular Board Meeting to order at 7:00 PM in the Administration & Resource Center boardroom.

ROLL CALL

Board members in attendance were Darlene Hartley, Pat Patterson, Julie Dean, Roger Myers, and Ken Christoferson. Student advisors, Elise Nowak and Jack Lund were present.

FLAG SALUTE
Jack Lund, Student Advisor, led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

Julie Dean made a motion to approve the Agenda for the March 19, 2013, Regular Board Meeting. Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Pat Patterson made a motion to approve the Minutes of the March 5, 2013, Special Board Retreat. Roger Myers seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

Roger Myers made a motion to approve the Minutes of the March 5, 2013, Regular Board Meeting. Pat Patterson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS

There were no comments from members of the audience.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Dr. Jean Shumate introduced the following reports:

DONATIONS

Jack Lund, Student Advisor, read the donation from Cedarhome Elementary PTA ($1,045.98).

RECOGNITION

Jack Lund and Elise Nowak read the Stanwood High School Science Team results from the Regional Science Olympiad Tournament.

Ken Christoferson announced and led the audience in singing “Happy Birthday” to Elise Nowak.

SHINING STAR AWARDS

Joy Rusko, Secretary to the Superintendent, introduced the Shining Star Award. Principal Maurene Stanton and teacher Nathan Christensen recognized Nate Lindberry as Lincoln Academy’s Shining Star. Mrs. Stanton also read comments from teachers Linda Miller and Casey Kelly, who were unable to attend. Nate was recognized for his leadership skills, strong work ethics and wit.

Principal Stanton also recognized Lora Schmidt as Lincoln Hill High School’s Shining Star. Lora was also recognized by Student Advisor Elise Nowak and teacher, Casey Kelley, for being kind, having high integrity and ambition, and for having a sense of humor. (Ms. Kelley was unable to attend.)

RECESS

Director Christoferson recessed the meeting at 7:20 p.m. for 5 minutes to allow guests to leave. He resumed the meeting at 7:25 p.m.

FINANCIAL REPORT

Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, reviewed the February 2013 Financial Reports including the Executive Summary, General Fund Balance, and Food Service Report. He also compared the previous year’s utilities and noted a savings, to-date, of nearly $30,000.00.

CONSENT AGENDA

Darlene Hartley made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items one through eight, listed below. Julie Dean seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously. 

  1. Donations.
  2. Stanwood High School Field Trips: a) Science Team to State Science Olympiad Tournament, April 12-14, 2013, Vancouver, Washington; b) Band Wind Ensemble and Percussion Clinic Tour, April 19-21, 2013, Portland, Oregon; c) Future Farmers of America Agriculture Mechanics Contest, April 17-18, 2013, Walla Walla, Washington.
  3. Stanwood Middle School Science Team Field Trip to State Competition April 12-13, 2013, Vancouver, Washington.
  4. Memorandum of Understanding with Stanwood-Camano Education Association for Medical Insurance Compliance Impacts.
  5. Resolution 2012/13-002 Reduced Educational Program and Reduction of Staff.
  6. 2013-14 Cooperative Agreement with Northwest Educational Service District 189 Legal Services Cooperative.

STUDENT ADVISORS REPORT

Elise Nowak announced that Lincoln Hill High School’s student leadership hosted a luncheon in recognition of Classified Employee Week; the High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) was in progress; the Lincoln Hill High School logo, a lynx paw, was painted on a wall; and a student meditation group gathered after school.

Jack Lund also said that Stanwood High School also taking the High School Proficiency Exam; the boys basketball team earned recognition as the State Academic Champions 3A division; spring sports have begun; and the spring drama, Footloose, was a great success.

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS

Roger Myers commended the student advisors for being involved in many of the activities that are offered.

Pat Patterson said he looked forward to the upcoming student-led conferences.

Darlene Hartley thanked Gary Platt for putting the budget into perspective. She also praised the high school boys’ basketball team for their academic achievement. Mrs. Hartley said she attended the Washington State School Directors Association (WSSDA) Regional Meeting along with Mr. Christoferson and Mr. Myers.

Julie Dean and Ken Christoferson attended and commented on the fine performance of Footloose.

ADJOURNMENT

Ken Christoferson adjourned the Regular Meeting at 7:38 PM.
