BOARD OF DIRECTORS

MINUTES OF THE MAY 21, 2013, REGULAR BOARD MEETING

CALL TO ORDER

Under the direction of President Ken Christoferson, the Elise Nowak and Jack Lund, Student Advisors, facilitated the board meeting. Elise Nowak called the Regular Board Meeting to order at 7:00 PM in the Administration & Resource Center boardroom.

ROLL CALL

Board members in attendance were Darlene Hartley, Pat Patterson, Julie Dean, Roger Myers and Ken Christoferson. Elise Nowak and Jack Lund, Student Advisors were present.

FLAG SALUTE
Jack Lund asked Ken Christoferson, Board President, to lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

Ken Christoferson made a motion to approve the Agenda for the May 21, 2013, Regular Board Meeting. Julie Dean seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Darlene Hartley made a motion to approve the Minutes of the May 7, 2013, Special Audit Exit Conference. Pat Patterson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

Roger Myers abstained from the vote because he did not attend the meeting.

Pat Patterson made a motion to approve the Minutes of the May 7, 2013, Regular Board Meeting. Ken Christoferson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously. Darlene Hartley and Roger Myers abstained from the vote because they did not attend the meeting.

There were no comments.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Dr. Jean Shumate introduced the following reports:

DONATIONS

Roger Myers read the donations from Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians ($294.48), Stanwood Chamber of Commerce ($100.00), Twin City Elementary PTA ($669.51), Stanwood Elementary PTA ($520.92), Phillips 66 Company ($500.00), and Windermere Foundation ($500.00).

RECOGNITIONS

Dr. Shumate introduced the following recognitions.

STUDENT ADVISORS

Dr. Shumate explained the student advisor’s role on the Board. Julie Dean recognized student advisors, Elise Nowak representing Lincoln Hill High School, and Jack Lund representing Stanwood High School, and presented each with a certificate for outstanding service and a memento made by the Technology Student Association.

Joy Rusko, Secretary to the Superintendent, introduced the following recognitions on behalf of the Board of Directors.

CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR

The Stanwood-Camano School District’s Bus Drivers were named Classified Employees of the Year. Lindy Phillips, Jeff Epright and Lee Heinrichs were available to receive the recognition. Mr. Heinrichs commented that the transportation department had just received an excellent rating from the Washington State Patrol’s annual inspection for 100% of the fleet of vehicles. Director Roger Myers, nominated the bus drivers and he shared his appreciation for everything the drivers do for the students and families in the district. Director Darlene Hartley presented the Classified Employee of the Year Award and certificate of appreciation to Lindy Phillips. Dr. Shumate presented gift certificates from sponsors: Sterling Bank, Dos Reales, and Stanwood Cinemas.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Jonathan Bletscher, Port Susan Middle School Choir and Band Director, received the Teacher of the Year Award. Principal Dan Johnston and Lisa Beckt and her son Travis Beckt, nominators, recognized Mr. Bletscher. Jewel and Joe Ruljancich and their son Isaiah, Craig and Nona Larson and their son Garrett, and Pat and Michelle Gaston and their daughter Gabby were unable to attend, also wrote nominations, but were unable to attend. Roger Myers presented the Teacher of the Year Award and certificate of appreciation to Jonathan Bletscher. Dr. Shumate presented gift certificates from sponsors: Sterling Bank, Dos Reales, and Stanwood Cinemas.

EMPLOYEE RETIREMENT

Dr. Linda Littlefield, Executive Director of Human Resources, introduced and shared employment history and personal comments for the following retirees: classified retirees, Ginger Pranghofer and Paula Wickman (unable to attend) and certificated retirees, Robin Bradley, Peggy Davidsmeyer, Katie Farrey, Scott Knight, and Kathleen Robertson (unable to attend). Dr. Littlefield also presented mementos of appreciation to each with their years of service inscribed.

RECESS

Elise Nowak recessed the meeting at 7:55 p.m. for approximately fifteen minutes for a reception in honor of the award recipients and retirees. The meeting resumed at 8:11 p.m.

FINANCIAL REPORTS

Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, reviewed the April 2013 Financial Reports including the Executive Summary, General Fund, and Food Service Report. He noted that enrollment declined by 249 Full-Time-Equivalent (FTE) since April 2012 and was below the budgeted projection by 62 FTE.

Roger Myers made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items 1-5, listed below. Julie Dean seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

Stanwood High School Field Trips: (a) Boys Golf Team to State Tournament, May 19-22, 2013, Vancouver, Washington, (b) Girls Basketball Team to President’s Weekend Basketball Tournament, June 20-23, 2013, Spokane, Washington, and (c) Future Business Leaders of America to National Competition, June 25-July1, 2013, Anaheim, California.
  3. Agreement with Pacific Lutheran University, June 1, 2013 through August 21, 2016.

STUDENT ADVISORS REPORT

Jack Lund announced it was the high school’s Spirit Week and fun activities were planned for after school, the spring sports were ending and graduation ceremonies would be June 7th.

Elise Nowak reported that Lincoln Hill celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week and the End of Course (EOC) testing was in progress.

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS

Board members thanked Elise Nowak and Jack Lund for their service as student advisors to the Board.

Roger Myers remembered the people affected by the tornado’s devastation that struck Oklahoma and the schools.

Pat Patterson congratulated the staff retirees and employee award recipients.

Darlene Hartley commented about the caring staff protecting students during the tornado in Oklahoma.

Julie Dean said she felt sad to see staff with such great experience retire. She asked Elise Nowak if she would consider returning next year and she announced the Port Susan Middle School’s concert would be June 6 at 7:00 PM.

Ken Christoferson felt though the tornado was in a different state and district; all children are ours.

Jean Shumate thanked Linda Littlefield, Sandy Kintner and Stacey Schuh for hosting the reception in honor of the employees who retired and received recognition.

ADJOURNMENT

Elise Nowak adjourned the Regular Meeting at 8:25 PM.
