MINUTES OF THE OCTOBER 21, 2014 REGULAR BOARD MEETING
CALL TO ORDER
President Ken Christoferson called the meeting to order at 6:15 PM in the Administration & Resource Center boardroom.
ROLL CALL
Board members in attendance were: Julie Dean, Darlene Hartley, Roger Myers, and Ken Christoferson. Al Schreiber joined the meeting at 6:33 PM.
EXECUTIVE SESSION
Ken Christoferson excused the Board for the Executive Session to review the performance of a staff member at 6:16 PM for approximately 45 minutes. The executive session adjourned at 6:51 PM.
RECONVENE MEETING
Mr. Christofersonhe reconvened the regular meeting at 7:00 PM. Mindy Atwell and Ingrid Pelletier, student advisors, were present.
FLAG SALUTE
George Zeigen, middle school counselor, led the Pledge of Allegiance.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Julie Dean made a motion to approve the Agenda for the October 21, 2014, Regular Board Meeting. Al Schreiber seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Roger Myers made a motion to approve the Minutes of the October 7, 2014, Regular Board Meeting. Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved.
Darlene Hartley made a motion to approve the Minutes of the October 15, 2014, Special Board Meeting. Al Schreiber seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved. Roger Myers and Julie Dean abstained, due to their absence.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
Dr. Jean Shumate introduced the following reports:
DONATIONS
Student Advisors, Ingrid Pelletier and Mindy Atwell, presented the donations, as follows: (1) Megan Watkins, Empire Lighting, donated $300.00 to Stanwood High School Library to assist with unpaid library fines, (2) Elizabeth Newland donated $184.45 to Utsalady Elementary for the Afternoon of Art Program, and (3) Leslie Tripp donated $150.00 to the District’s Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying Poster Contest.
Tod Klundt, Stanwood Middle School Principal, thanked the Northwest Music Foundation for donating $26,000.00 in cash, instruments and materials to Stanwood Middle School and the district’s music programs. He introduced Michelle Rockwood, Stanwood Middle School’s Band and Choir Teacher to present the donation from the Northwest Music Foundation. Michelle gratefully thanked the Northwest Music Foundation for the generous donation of $20,000.00, in which $10,000.00 would directly impact the music department at Stanwood Middle School and $10,000.00 would benefit the music programs throughout the district. In addition, 2 clarinets, a cornet, a trumpet, 4 flutes, a tenor saxophone and a bell kit (valued at $2,275.00) and various materials and music supplies (valued at $3,725.00) will be used throughout the district’s music programs. Cookie Spirk and Major Freeman, on behalf of the Northwest Music Foundation, said that the intent of the donation was to enrich the community with music and hoped that the donation was the beginning of an ongoing relationship.
HARASSMENT, INTIMIDATION, BULLYING POSTER CONTEST
Dr. Lloy Schaaf, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, reported on the district-wide poster contest in recognition of October’s Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying prevention month. Students created anti-bullying posters that were judged, based on design and slogans. Students who received first through third place attended the meeting and were recognized for their efforts. Each received certificates of achievement, a poster-sized duplicate to take home, and gift certificates for local food establishments. Leslie Tripp, State Farm Insurance Agent, donated funds to purchase the gift certificates. The following students were recognized:

Director Christoferson recessed the meeting for approximately 5 minutes to allow guests to leave. He resumed the meeting at 7:30 PM.
AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN (AAUW)
Ann Milton, member of the Stanwood-Camano American Association of University Women (AAUW), announced that six middle school girls received scholarships to attend Tech Trek at Pacific Lutheran University, sponsored by the Stanwood-Camano AAUW Chapter. Tech Trek is a Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) one-week camp for girls. George Zeigen, middle school counselor, was instrumental in facilitating the process for the students to attend the Tech Trek Camp. Students from Port Susan Middle School, Jacqueline Killinger, Anna Foster, and Ingrid Phillips shared their experiences from attending the camp. Stanwood Middle School students, Kaitlyn Leslie, Alexa Mahoney, and Mariah Gilbert, were unable to attend.
EMPLOYEE AWARDS
Joy Rusko, Secretary to the Superintendent, introduced the following awards:
Classified Employee of the Month, September: Chuck Kippenhan, custodian at Lincoln Hill High School/Academy (Church Creek Campus) was recognized by Principal Ryan Ovenell and Maurene Stanton, Executive Director of Human Resources (past principal at Lincoln Hill High/Academy), read her nomination for Mr. Kippenhan.
Director Ken Christoferson presented a Certificate of Achievement to Mr. Kippenhan, Dr. Shumate presented a framed picture to be hung at his school, and sponsor Tony Warner, Umpqua Bank Manager, presented gift certificates from Dos Reales and Stanwood Cinemas.
Ms. Rusko announced that the Teacher of the Month for September, Kris Merritt, was not able to attend the meeting and would be recognized at the November 18th board meeting.

Director Christoferson recessed the meeting for approximately 5 minutes to allow guests to leave. He resumed the meeting at 7:45 PM.
FINANCIAL REPORT
Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, gave the monthly financial report for August 2014, which was the final report for the 2013-14 school year. He reviewed the Executive Summary and noted that the final budgeted enrollment was down by about 2 Full Time Equivalent (FTE). Mr. Platt discussed the General Fund’s Fund Balance Accounts, and described the categories of non-spendable, restricted, committed, assigned, and unassigned. The Food Service Program Report was also discussed.
CONSENT AGENDA
Roger Myers made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items 1-9, listed below. Al Schreiber seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

2. Stanwood High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Field Trip for the National Fall Leadership Conference, November 5-9, 2014, Washington D.C.
3. Interagency Agreement with Everett Community College “College in the High School” for 2014-15.
4. Event Contract with Jewel Hospitality for Stanwood High School Prom at Ballard Bay Club on May 2, 2015.
5. McGranahan Architects for Architectural and Engineering Services to Modernize or Replace Stanwood High School and Other Projects and Authorizes Administration to Negotiate Contact Terms for Such Services.

- Purchase of an Uninterruptible Power Supply System for the District’s New Data Center.
STUDENT ADVISORS’ REPORT
Ingrid Pelletier, Stanwood High School: reported on sporting events, homecoming-week activities, a blood drive October 18, trick or treating October 31, and Veterans’ Day assemblies would be held on November 12.
Mindy Atwell, Lincoln Hill High School: reported that students attended an assembly about harassment, intimidation and bullying, a pancake breakfast, Veterans’ Day Assembly would be held November 6, and the Student Leadership Team is exploring the possibility of having school yearbooks.
ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS
Al Schreiber appreciated the harassment, intimidation and bullying poster project, the music donation from Northwest Music Foundation and Gary Platt’s work on the high school projects.
Darlene Hartley complimented Mindy and Ingrid, student advisors, for doing such a good job.
Julie Dean said she was excited about the American Association of University Women’s (AAUW) Tech Trek scholarships for young girls and she also appreciated the poster project.
Ken Christoferson commented on the generous donation from the Northwest Music Foundation.
ADJOURNMENT
Director Christoferson adjourned the regular meeting at 8:13 PM.
