STANWOOD-CAMANO SCHOOL DISTRICT
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
MINUTES OF THE MAY 20, 2008, REGULAR MEETING

CALL TO ORDER
Roger Myers called the meeting to order at 6:00 PM. Board members in attendance were: Roger Myers, Darlene Hartley, Ken Christoferson, Pat Patterson, and Julie Dean. Student Advisors, Alex Keller and Anne Marie Olson, arrived at 7:00 pm. Jean Shumate led the Pledge of Allegiance.

EXECUTIVE SESSION
Roger Myers adjourned to executive session at 6:03 PM, for approximately thirty minutes, to review the performance of a public employee.

RECONVENE
Roger Myers reconvened the regular meeting at 6:45 PM.

STUDY SESSION
Gary Platt, Executive Director, Business and Operations, gave a presentation on the 2008-09 budget.

Roger Myers announced that the student advisors would conduct the remainder of the meeting.

Anne Marie Olson, student advisor, conducted the following meeting items.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Darlene Hartley made a motion to approve the agenda. Julie Dean seconded the motion; it was voted on and unanimously approved.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Roger Myers made a motion to approve the minutes of the May 6, 2008, Regular Board Meeting. Ken Christoferson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS
There was no audience participation.

SPECIAL RECOGNITIONS
Staff Retirements: Dr. Linda Littlefield, Executive Director of Human Resources, announced the retirees and shared personal attributes of each. The following district staff were recognized: Becky Ball, Port Susan Middle School 8th grade teacher, 20 years of service; Mary Hickman, Stanwood Elementary teacher, 20 years of service; Jo Jeffrey, Cedarhome Elementary teacher/music specialist, 26 years of service; Sandra Auckland, Port Susan Middle School secretary, 22 years of service; Sharron Raider, Utsalady Elementary office manager, 27 years of service, James Ross, Utsalady Elementary lead custodian, 7 years of service; and Ruth Miller, payroll supervisor, 21 years of service.

Shining Star Award: Cathy Britt, Public Information Coordinator, introduced principals from Utsalady Elementary and Stanwood Middle School to recognize their respective students for the Shining Star Award. Jonathen Bernard, fifth-grade student at Utsalady Elementary and Robert Barnes, eighth grade student at Stanwood Middle School were the recipients of the Shining Star Award.

Anne Marie Olson recessed the meeting at 7:50 PM, for approximately 15 minutes, to enjoy refreshments and honor the retirees.

Alex Keller, student advisor, reconvened the regular meeting at 8: 05 pm.

Dr. Jean Shumate announced the following reports:

Gary Platt gave the financial report for the month of April 2008.

Roger Myers made a motion to approve the consent agenda, listed below. Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

STUDENT ADVISORS
Alex Keller announced the sporting events and Anne Marie Olson presented the activities and upcoming calendar events.

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS
All of the board members expressed their appreciation to recognize students for their achievements and to honor the retirees that have served the district.

Roger Myers reminded board members that the board would set-up a booth at the Stanwood/Camano Fair; he attended the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) Awards ceremony in which Craig Kelly, a fifth grade teacher and John Russell, community member, were recognized for their contributions to student achievement and leadership. The Stanwood High School Jazz band also performed at the awards ceremony. Mr. Myers also stated that Julie Dean would facilitate the board retreat on June 3, 2008.

ADJOURNMENT
Alex Keller adjourned the regular meeting at 8:03 PM.
