BOARD OF DIRECTORS
MINUTES OF THE DECEMBER 15, 2009, REGULAR BOARD MEETING
 
CALL TO ORDER
Roger Myers called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM.  Board members in attendance were Ken Christoferson, Julie Dean, Darlene Hartley, Pat Patterson, and Roger Myers.  Ashley Glenn and David Thomas, Student Advisors, were present.  Roger Myers led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Julie Dean made a motion to approve the agenda.  Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Darlene Hartley made a motion to approve the Minutes of the December 1, 2009, Regular Board Meeting.  Pat Patterson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.  

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS
Katie Files, Stanwood, was concerned that student lockers were not available at Port Susan Middle School.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

DONATIONS 
Ashley Glenn and David Thomas read the donations from Alan Acres Tree Farm, Bob and Susan Cole, Robert Riner Studios, and Elger Bay Elementary PTA and recognition of the transportation department. 

RECOGNITIONS
Joy Rusko, secretary to the superintendent, introduced the Board recognition awards as follows:

SHINING STAR AWARDS –
Pam Gentz, Twin City Elementary (TCE) Principal, and Megan Sylvester, teacher, recognized Sterling Stephens, a 5th grade student who has overcome some struggles to be a successful student.  He is known for being a great human being, a student that works hard and always has a smile.

Barbara Marsh, Stanwood Middle School Principal, introduced 3 brothers Chance, Chase, and Christian Blair who earned the Shining Star award at SMS.  Laure Rancich, teacher, described Christian (7th grade) as having a great attitude, is a good listener, is an active participant in class, is respectful, and willing to do whatever is needed.  Tim Livingston, teacher, said it was his honor to speak about Chance and Chase (8th grade), who are both students in his class.  He said the twins have overcome extra ordinary amounts of adversity in the past few years with perseverance and courage.  Each puts forth their best effort with a smile and great attitude.  

Mike Gibson, Sterling Savings Bank manager is a sponsor of the Shining Star awards in partnership with Lenz Enterprises, Stanwood Cinemas, and Hollywood Video.  He presented all of the Shining Star award recipients with gifts.

Board members presented certificates of achievement to each of the Shining Star recipients.

CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH – December 2009
Barbara Marsh, Stanwood Middle School principal, introduced Jim Williams, custodian, as the recipient of the Classified Employee of the Month award.  Kym Shoemaker, teacher, read her nomination and Mrs. Marsh read the nomination from Gaylen Brule.  Each said how much they appreciated Jim’s great attitude and willingness to do whatever it takes for teachers to be successful in their classrooms, and always with a smile.

Mike Gibson, Sterling Savings Bank manager, thanked Jim for what he does for the District.  Jim was earlier presented with gift certificates from Stanwood Cinemas and Dos Reales.  Board members presented Jim with an achievement certificate.

DECEMBER ENROLLMENT
Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, presented the enrollment report for the month of December.  He reported that there were 4,865.07 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) students, which was 7 FTE less than the month of November.  He reviewed the enrollment history and said it follows the patterns of decline as in past years.

NOVEMBER FINANCIAL REPORT
Gary Platt reviewed the financial reports for the month of November including the executive summary, fund balance report, debt service report, and food service report.

CONSENT AGENDA
Pat Patterson made a motion to approve the Consent Agenda, listed below.  Ken Christoferson seconded the motion; it was voted on and passed unanimously.
1.    Donations.
2.    Option and Land Lease Agreement with Verizon Wireless and Authorize Superintendent to Execute the Agreement.
3.    Contract with Warm Beach Camp and Elger Bay Elementary for 2009-10 Outdoor Environmental Education Program.
4.    Elger Bay Elementary 5th Grade Outdoor Environmental Education Field Trip April 28-30, 2010.
5.    Connections Program Service Agreement with Arlington School District.
6.    Personnel Consent Agenda.
7.    Bills and Payroll.

STUDENT ADVISORS’ REPORT
Ashley Glenn reported that Lincoln Hill High School began a partial independent program early in December and 8 students have enrolled; information on the Boys’ and Girls’ State program is available by contacting the principal or counselors.

David Thomas said college representatives presented to juniors and seniors at Stanwood High School; winter sports have begun; the toy drive would end on December 18; and the girls’ cross country team earned first place at the state competition. 

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS
Ken Christoferson said he enjoyed the staff and student recognition programs.

Pat Patterson commented on the heartfelt dedication of our teachers. He said the Warm Beach Camp Lights of Christmas was going well and on Sunday, December 20th there would be a celebration of Norwegian heritage with an “Oof-dah” variety show. 

Darlene Hartley said she attended Girls’ State and learned the process of legislation in 1960.  She wished everyone to have a relaxing, invigorating, and joyful winter break.

Roger Myers wished everyone a healthy, happy holiday season.
