MINUTES OF THE APRIL 6, 2010, REGULAR BOARD MEETING
 
CALL TO ORDER
Roger Myers called the meeting to order at 12:00 PM in the Administration & Resource Center board room.  Board members in attendance were Ken Christoferson, Julie Dean, Darlene Hartley, and Roger Myers.  Pat Patterson was not able to attend.

Roger Myers led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA 
Julie Dean made a motion to approve the agenda.  Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Darlene Hartley made a motion to approve the Minutes of the March 16, 2010, Regular Board Meeting.  Ken Christoferson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved.  Roger Myers recused himself as he was not present during most of the meeting.

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS
Mitzi Cameron, 1242 N. Gerde, Camano Island, voiced her concern as a parent and community member about proposed budget reductions.  She requested options be available to all students that wish to participate in athletic activities.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

DONATIONS AND RECOGNITION
Mrs. Hartley read the donations from community member Don Bayes and read recognitions for the Stanwood High School History Club and Science Teams, Port Susan Middle School Science Team, and the National Scholastic American Vision Award winner, Jenny Allison.

STRATEGIC PLAN UPDATE
Superintendent Jean Shumate, Assistant Superintendents Lloy Schaaf and Mike Olson, and Executive Director of Business Services, Gary Platt, gave the Strategic Plan update presentation.  Each recapped progress and described recent activities for each target area.  Some of the items discussed were:  improving assessment systems with staff development; communication with parents and community using student-led conferences and community survey; improving instructional core throughout the district, maintaining facilities using green products; ensuring fiscal stability and examine the organizational chart. 

APRIL ENROLLMENT 
Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, gave the enrollment update for the month of April.  He announced that there was a decline of 17 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) students. The total average of students for the month of  April was 4,856.42 FTE.

CONSENT AGENDA
Julie Dean made a motion to approve the remainder of the Consent Agenda items 1-5, listed below.  Ken Christoferson seconded the motion; it was voted on and passed unanimously.
1.    Personnel Consent Agenda.
2.    Stanwood High School Field Trips:  a. Family Career Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) State Competition April 6-9, 2010, Wenatchee, Washington; b. Future Farmers of America (FFA) Agriculture Mechanics Team to State Competition April 20-21, 2010, Walla Walla, Washington; FFA Resource Team to Asotin County Fair Livestock and Meats Career Development Event April 22-23, 2010, Pullman, Washington; d. FFA Resource Team to State Livestock Career Development Events May 4-5, 2010, Spokane, Washington; FFA Natural Resource Team to North Central Washington Junior Livestock Show April 2-3, 2010, Moses Lake, Washington.
3.    Policy 4130, Title I Parental Involvement for First Reading.
4.    Solicit Students to Participate in the ISE Field Trip to Germany in 2011.
5.    Personnel Consent Agenda.

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS
Ken Christoferson said he appreciated the update on the strategic plan and looked forward to the results from the community budget survey.

Darlene Hartley thanked Mitzi Cameron for attending the meeting and sharing her concerns.

Julie Dean commented on the wonderful performances by high school students in the “Wedding Singer” and elementary students at Elger Bay Elementary performing in “Rumpelstiltskin” by the Missoula Theater Company.

Roger Myers reminded board members that the Washington State School Directors’ Association (WSSDA) Regional Meeting would be April 8th in Granite Falls.

ADJOURNMENT
Roger Myers adjourned the Regular Meeting at 12:49 PM.
