MINUTES OF THE MAY 18, 2010, REGULAR BOARD MEETING
 
CALL TO ORDER
Student Advisor, Ashley Glen, called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM in the Administration & Resource Center boardroom.  Board members in attendance were Ken Christoferson, Julie Dean, Darlene Hartley, Pat Patterson and Roger Myers.  David Thomas and Ashley Glenn, student advisors, were present.   Darlene Hartley led the Pledge of Allegiance.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA 
Roger Myers made a motion to approve the agenda.  Julie Dean seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Roger Myers made a motion to approve the Minutes of the May 4, 2010, Special Retreat Minutes.  Ken Christoferson seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

Ken Christoferson made a motion to approve the Minutes of the May 4, 2010, Regular Board Meeting.  Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously. 

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS
There were no comments by citizens.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

DONATIONS 
David Thomas read the donation from Stanwood Elementary P.T.A.

RECOGNITIONS
Teacher and Classified Employees of the Year
Joy Rusko, secretary to the superintendent, introduced the 2009-10 Teacher and Classified Employees of the Year.  Awards were given to Teacher of the Year DeAnn Larson, Elger Bay Elementary reading specialist, and to Classified Employees of the Year Ann Peterson, Dianne Rice, Sonia Kline, and Heidi Harter, para educators for the Learning Assistance Program at Utsalady Elementary.  Board members presented engraved paperweights made by the high school Technology Assistance Program (TSA) students.  Sterling Savings Bank and Lenz Enterprises sponsored the year-end awards in partnership with Dos Reales and Portrait by Indy. 

Student Advisors to the Board of Directors
 
Board members recognized Ashley Glenn and David Thomas for their outstanding service as Student Advisors to the Board of Directors.  Each received a certificate and paperweight.

Staff Retirements 
Dr. Linda Littlefield, Executive Director of Human Services, introduced the certificated and classified employees who retired from the Stanwood-Camano School District.  Each was honored with kind words and a gift.  The following certificated employees were honored:  Melody Buck, John Ridge (not present), Toni Schlosser, Bill Walker, and Melva Walser.  The classified employees were: Lynne Gore, Rachel Hentila, and Dan Wickman.  Joan Christensen and Mary Conners were not present.

FINANCIAL REPORT
Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, reviewed the general fund balance, revenues and expenditures for the month of April. The managers’ expenditures report indicated that there were no expenditures over 100%.  Mr. Platt said the food service program reported serving 96 more lunches and 66 more breakfast meals than projected. 

CONSENT AGENDA
David Thomas, student advisor, asked if there was a motion to approve the Consent Agenda.  Pat Patterson made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items 1-8, listed below.  Darlene Hartley seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.
1.    Donations.
2.    Approval of Mathematics Adoption for Precalculus and Special Education Math as listed:
a.    Precalculus:  Larson, Hostetler, Edwards.  Precalculus with Limits.  A graphing Approach (fifth edition), Houghton Mifflin, 2008.
b.    Special Education Mathematics for High School:  John Woodward and Mary Stroh, Transmath, Cambian Learning, Sopris West, 2010.  Recommended for Special Education Math 2 & 3.
c.    Special Education Mathematics for Middle School and High School Math 1:  Math Navigator, America’s Choice, 2006.
3.    Approval of Learning Improvement Plan 2010-2013.  
4.    Approval of Stanwood High School Field Trips:
a.    Future Farmers of America Natural Resources Team to State FFA Envirothon Competition May 25-26, 2010, Randal, Washington.
b.    Cheer Squad to Attend the Universal Cheerleading Association Camp June 22-25, 2010, Tacoma, Washington.
c.    Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) to Attend the FBLA National Competition July 14-18, 2010, Nashville, Tennessee.
d.    History Club to Attend National History Day Competition June 12-17, 2010, University of Maryland, D. C.
5.  Approval of Contract with Warm Beach Camp for Utsalady Elementary Outdoor Education Camp, April 20-22, 2011. 
6.   Approval of Stanwood-Camano Education Association (SCEA) Memorandum of Agreement for Washington State’s Race to the Top Application.  
7.  Approval of Personnel Consent Agenda.

STUDENT ADVISORS’ REPORT
Ashley Glenn was proud to announce that she will be graduating from Lincoln Hill High School with a 3.0 grade point average.  

David Thomas announced his graduation from Stanwood High School and reported that Relay for Life was May 21-22nd. He also reported on high school student activities and said he was impressed by the retirees dedication to students. 

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS
Ken Christoferson said it was a great night, citing the commitment to education with all of the staff that was recognized.

Pat Patterson commended Ashley and David for facilitating the Board meeting and said that they will be missed.  He also commented that the math adoption and District’s Learning improvement plan has a sense of alignment.

Darlene Hartley, too, said it was rewarding to honor so many employees for their contributions to our students.

Julie Dean praised the awards recipients and retirees.  She also enjoyed participating in the Utsalady Elementary 2nd grade field trip to Camano Island State Park.

Roger Myers said that the District would miss the retirees and he figured that there were over 239 years of service combined.  He also thanked the student advisors, Sandy Kintner and Joy Rusko for their help at the meeting.  Roger announced graduation dates for Stanwood High School - June 11th and Lincoln Hill High School - June 17th.

ADJOURNMENT
David Thomas adjourned the Regular Meeting at 8:37 PM.

STUDY SESSION
A study session to discuss levy information began at 6:15 PM.  Gary Platt, Executive Director of Business Services, explained legislative changes and impacts on levy amounts. He updated the Board with changes from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) regarding levy lid calculations.  Board members did not favor going to the voters to increase taxes.
