This time of year brings fewer daylight hours and increased safety concerns for students who are walking to and from school or the bus stop in the dark.

Please help us keep our students safe as they travel to and from school by reminding your children of these and other safety rules.

Traveling to and from school:

  • Allow plenty of time to walk safely to the school bus stop.
  • Wear bright, contrasting colored coats or put a piece of high visibility, reflective tape on coats and backpacks.
  • Walk on the sidewalks or as far away from traffic as possible.
  • Be alert to traffic and look both ways before stepping into the road and when getting on and off the bus.
  • Go straight home and always let your parent or another responsible adult know where you are.
  • Never accept a ride from anyone they do not know. If they miss the bus or the weather is inclement, they should report back to you or the adult you have designated to help them at times like this.
  • Walk in pairs or with other children.
  • Stay in a safe place away from the street while waiting for the bus.
  • Avoid running games, shoving, or horseplay while waiting for the bus.
  • If they have to cross the street to get to the bus, walk in front of the bus, where the driver can see them. Never walk behind the bus.
  • Tell the bus driver if they drop something near or under the bus rather than trying to retrieve it themselves.

Stranger Awareness:

  • Avoid talking to strangers.
  • Tell a trusted adult immediately if they witness a stranger acting suspiciously around them or other children.
  • Go to a trusted adult and ask for help if they feel threatened in any way.

Information for parents of students who ride the bus to school

  • If your child is going to get off the bus at a different stop, you must pre-arrange this by calling the school office to get a bus pass.
  • If you meet your child at the bus stop after school, wait on the side of the street where the child will exit the bus.
