The state money is allocated generally on enrollment or the number of students served by special programs. The federal government provides some funding for activities such as special education, programs for disadvantaged students, programs for students who are learning English, and school lunches and breakfasts for low-income students. About 18 percent of operating revenue is collected through a local tax levy approved by local voters. The levy money is used to pay for additional teachers and teacher salaries, transportation, maintenance, and student activities to name a few. A levy approved by voters in February 2008 allows the Stanwood-Camano School District to collect local levy funds until December 31, 2012.
